Inexplicably rusting.....

Default burning oil

okay okay i know i should check my oil every time i fill up. but i dont. i do, however, change it every 5000km (3100miles) or 3 months. tonight i checked it because its about due, and nothing registered on the stick. then i put 3/4 of a litre in and it barely brought it up to low. my car only has 28000 km (17500miles) on it. do these things burn a lot of oil, or do i have a problem?

it really depends on what kind of oil you are using, some oils burn faster than others, but theres no way you should burn ALL of it (no matter what brand) if you are changing the oil every 3k miles. Maybe you didnt warm it up enough? even then it should register something. I would change the oil immediately, make sure you get a good 5 quarts in there, and check it VERY often to see if there are any huge changes. dont forget to buy a new crush washer.

Unusual I think. Is this the first time you've see so much oil missing? My Forester uses less than 1/4 quart in 5,000 miles. If this just started happening then I'd look to the PCV and/or leaks (like from an oil filter). If it always uses excessive oil then you may have glazed cylender walls.

im guessing that would allow oil up into the cylinder where it would be getting burned, right?
************************************************** ********UPDATE
************************************************** ******** i had the oil changed thismorning, and asked the tech (independant shop) if they hit all the grease fittings underneath with the gun. he said there are non on that car. is that so? all of my mech experience is on small engines and tractors, the latter of which are full of grease fittings that need it all the time.

re the pcv, there are zero drips on the drive way, and i would expect to see some. anyone have a link to a diagram of where it is?

Correct, no graese fittings.

The pcv valve is located either on the passenger side of the intake manifold just before the throttle body, Or under the throttle body on the intake manifold.

your miliage only 28000km....pcv must be woking well...it is due 48k...

it depends on how dard you drive....what oil u use...

also...2.5NA hold 4.2qt (4 liter) engine oil...including oil filter..

just take the drain bolt ,,filter off.....you will realize how much oil left ..

however...1qt loss with non-synthetic oil between 5000k changing interval is not issue.
