My Quest for a cheap decent snow tire, Dunlop Graspic DS-1 anyone?

Dunlop Graspic DS-1
195-65-15 is the size im looking for

Anyone have any experience with these. or any other snow tire in the 50-60 dollar range.

...at this price who needs to be too picky? I figure these will certainly be better than any all-season tire and will they be that much worse than say the Michelins for $$$? I see that Tire Rack has a package deal with these tires for Scoobies. Maybe Luke can be of more assistance. How's that for an unsolicited opinion with no factual back-up!

I do remember reading some interesting snow tire comparisons in some German Auto mags. I shall see if these are listed and pass on their findings here. Okay?

a couple of reputable German magazines rated the Pirelli Snow Sport 210 and Conti TS 790 tops in some recent test of winter tires in: braking in snow, accelaration in snow, handling in snow, aquaplaning, handling on wet streets and braking on dry streets. Both got 5stars in numerous of these categories. Unfortunately I do no have access to the raw data that was actually in the printed magazine. But believe me these German mags test completely scientifically. So their conclusions are not just subjective flights of fancy.

Ratings were so:

Pirelli SnowSport 210
Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3
ContiWinterContact TS 790
Dunlop SP WinterSport M3
Michelin Pilot Alpin
Nokian Hakkapeliitta NRW
Vredestein Wintrac
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22
etc.

these were all H rated tires. The V rated tires were not as good in the snow, etc. hope that helps a little bit. if you have any questions about these guys' results I can see if there is more info.

I got a set from Tire Rack last year, and I like them a lot. I bought them because they were the cheapest they had in that size, so I wasn't expecting much, but I was wrong. They work great! They have a soft tread compound and soft sidewalls, so they're no fun to drive on when it's clear out, but after putting maybe 4k miles on them this winter, with 2/3 of that on dry roads, they're hardly worn at all. The tread is a bit more deeper and aggressive than that picture indicates.

All of the Dunlop Graspic series tires are cheap and are awesome in deep snow and off road. However, they're also terrible in the wet/dry and are about as unrefined as modern snow tires get. If you live in an area with lots of snowfall and not much sweeping, definitely get the Graspics. But otherwise, stay away.

I have experience with the Graspic HS-1, Graspic DS-1, Guardex, and Arctic Alpin.

well my re's did pretty well in the 18 inch blizzard last year, I got major awsome video of it, only got stock once, and a little bit of rocken got me out (got that on video too doh!)

Thanks for the info...I hope we get alot of snow this year..I think I may get these...do you think they handle better than the re's on dry pavement! rofl!

No, the RE92's are definitely better than the Graspics in the dry.

My experience with the Graspic HS1 (which the DS1 replaced) was fabulous to say the least.
I had them on my old Civic, which was lowered mind you, and I was unstoppable. I dusted SUV's and a CRV off the line. I must've embarrased the CRV driver because he came barreling by me

If the DS1 are cheap, then for sure buy them. Graspics are good snow tires.

I bought a set of the DS1's last winter from Tire Rack. I like them.

Since the Minnesota road conditions in winter are generally unpredictable, I figured I would have more fun with real snow tires. I wasn't disappointed. In the snow, whether it's packed or not, the car does great predictable 4 wheel drifts and has lots of traction. Considerably better than the re's. In the dry they're a little squirmy, but then who needs great dry traction when there are ice patches when you least expect them? Besides, I put nice sticky ones on in the summer.

Just another opinion...
