Default Dropping Resistor Question

I own a 1999, automatic transmission, Subaru Impreza and I would like to know what is the function of the dropping resistor. It's located on the strut tower. I believe it is related to the transmission but can anyone tell me the purpose of it and how it operates.

It ties into the shift B solenoid I believe. What it does is provide a place to sink current. The TCU will vary the voltage which varies line pressure on the shift solenoid. The resistor dissipates extra current in the form of heat.

Some people have removed this resistor, which gives firmer shifts, but can lead to the damage of the transmission.
