Thumbs up

What kind of bikes have you ridden before? Will you be riding at night? how often do you think that you will use a bike rack?

If you are new to biking and plan on being on decent, then a fitness type bike with mountain bike bars, skinny/slick tires is a good bet. you dont want a full suspension b/c it wastes energy. you can often find old full rigid mtn bikes at the bike stores that make great commuters- just change the tires (go to MEC) for city tires. Front suspension is not a bad idea if you are going to trail ride easy stuff with the kid and it will make your ride more enjoyable. You could also check out some of the costco bikes... more thatn what you want (or probably need) but they are a good value for what you pay (and the costco warranty. The most important thing is to make sure the bike fits you!

If you are planning on riding to from work, dont forget to budget for really good lights and a safety vest. The lights make a huge diffenrnce in the evening. Get good quality light. I like at least a 10 watt rechargable and use a 6 and a 10 on my bike. helmet lights are great too. They work well with one on the bike and one on your melon.

As for racks, the cheap trunk tripod that rests on your car is ok (but may mar the paint if you use it alot). if you ride a lot and you and the kid both have bikes then consider either a decent roof carrier or hitch mount.

I do have an older KHS mtn bike that i have set up as a commuter and I might consider selling. Also there was a set of yakima rack for sale in the vic board for a reasonable price. If you want to add a bike rack to it, i have 2 fork down carriers for the Yakima racks for sale (you need a quick front tire) - very nice rack and very secure.

Enjoy your riding and Ride Safe!

Yeah, that's about right.

I've got one for sale. Official Subaru USA bike rack (made by Yakima, better than the Subaru Canada one), including crossbars. Discount retail at $132.56 + $179.36 = $312+tax+ship. Make me an offer. It's in pretty much mint condition.

Great shop for the kind of thing you're looking for. They'll steer you right even if they don't have what you want. Don't buy Can. Tire crap.

Yeah, that's about right.

The bike rack I'm selling can pretty much fit anything with flat cross bars (Impreza, Forester, Legacy, etc.) The included cross bars are for any GD chassis (02-07) Impreza wagon.

Yes, two bikes. And it's only hard to get it on the roof if (a) you have a crazy lift kit or (b) you have a ghetto bike that weighs a tonne or (c) you lack upper body strength.
