Default I’ve officially had it with SubieSport Magazine!

I’ve been a long time loyal reader/subscriber since issue #2 and have enjoyed the magazine from their beginning. The bright and creative editing staff really did a great job in the earlier issues capturing the comradely amongst fellow Suby enthusiast by covering everything from the latest news & rumors circulating the boards, to the larger Suby specific events, and everything in-between. Often I found myself eagerly anticipated the next upcoming issue hoping to see the various projects of fellow community members covered in detailed articles on their pages. What was once a very grassroots, community oriented magazine, is now anything but…

The “Readers Ride” section of the magazine is where I focus the majority of my comments. The editors are open to considering submissions from all walks of the Suby community, regardless of Subaru model, highly modified or otherwise stock. What a great publication to sift through what must be a LOT of reader-rides submissions with an unbiased approach excerpting equal and fair publishing consideration to all (yeah right)!...

I drive what could be considered to many as a very unique and highly modified Subaru. Sure it’s not for everybody, some may think it’s nothing special, but hey it’s something you don’t see everyday and certainly worthy of a submission. So I gather up my pictures, write a nice overview covering the highlights, and send it all off to the Readers-ride email address ensuring I followed all the submission instructions correctly. Several months go by and I hear nothing for a response. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting to get word that they loved my suby and want to publish ASAP (although that would have been nice). But how about the courtesy of a response acknowledging receipt of my submission? “Thanks for your submission to reader-rides, we’re considering your vehicle for our pages”… How hard is that? So I send off another submission, then months later another… No response. How rude, unprofessional, and lacking in relations towards subscribers! You’re not impressed by my unique Suby nor think it deserves to be covered under readers-rides; that’s absolutely fine but at least allow me the decency of a response. “Sorry not what where looking for”… or how about “Thanks for your submission, we may choose to use it in the future”….nothing, no response whatsoever…

Then I get the October issue today and am officially disgusted by the magazine. A hot chick in a camo skirt with a mildly modified STi w/pink wheels makes the cover!!!!? Like the leg-humping topic hasn’t been covered enough in the members gallery, they have to make it a front page spread! I hope this advertising technique wins over a lot of new subscribers, cuz they’ll need at least one more to make up for this lost reader…

I can't say I disagree with your arguement. However, the cover article was more about the woman versus her car. Have you read it??

Don't get me wrong, I mean no offense to Stephanie. This post is not about the article featuring her or her car, simply using it as an indirect example of their editing...

**EDIT** You do know that the official SubieSport Mag forum is on NASIOC. This should be moved to it.

I agree the cover story was a bit on the weak side since the car is basically stock except for painted rims and a useless FMIC (stock everything else), but she is a woman working in the Aftermarket industry, so that is something. And she is friends w/ a member of the Magazines team.

Im sure you will make the readers rides soon. How does it look on the outside? If it looks clean im sure they will put it in. Figure they only have two, sometimes 1 readers ride in the magazine to leave room for content.

Its a great magazine and I enjoy it every 2 months.

haha they used the photo with that ugly mesh grill in the scoop.
I havent gotten my issue yet... actually no issues yet and I paid for a subscript about 2 months ago...

And I agree that they should have at least sent you something, its not hard to drop an email out if you included your address.

Edit, it was in the mailbox when I got home, good stuff.

The magazine comes out bi-monthly, this should be your first issue. Talk to Ryan

Again, before this post gets all kinds of hate thrown my way, it was not meant to be offensive to Stephanie and her feature whatsoever. Just an example of Subiesports “SELECTIVE” editing…

Hasn't there only been about 9 issues to date? Being as they are an independent and very new magazine, I would cut them some slack.

I like the mag. I think they do a great job. Not every reader is going to like every article, but no publication is ever going to satisfy all their readers. This is not unique to SubieSport.

But since we're bashing the editing, I'd like to chime in with my pet peeve that has been with the mag since Issue #1. I have still to see an issue that was free of spolling mistooks. A couple of the issues were so bad, I was tempted to correct them in red pen and send them back. But I'm still going to renew my subscription.

Stuart.

Since I edit the readers rides I will give you the real deal on "reader's rides"
1. We don't get too many submissions every month. Which is weird imho. of these almost 3/4 have unusable photos basically becuase they are too small. My guess is that the photos the OP submitted were too small.
2. Of the submissions we get, there are several that are STi's with FMIC and a big turbo. I hate to say it but these are dime a dozen and so we look for the really weird off the wall stuff after we toss all the unusable submissions.
3. After these are sifted we then go for a newer bigger hp car with all the bling mods etc.
4. This is the last part of the magazine to get edited and is usually done in a moderate crunch, thusly, I never respond to readers rides. Sorry if that upsets you.

So I will make this easy on everyone. If you really want to get into readers rides make it as easy as possible. by doing the following:
1. Send hi-res photos. these should be at least 5x6in or bigger at 300dpi MINIMUM
2. Write a little something about your car, not just a mod list... I hate lists of mods... it means I have to write a little something about your car which I have to extrapolate from a list... give it some character, some flair, tell us about the time you ran from the border patrol smuggling children from the evil gestapo or something...
3. Don't be offended when I don't run it. Seriously, thousands of readers only a few pages of readers rides and only a few usable submissions. Sorry.

Really editorial coverage is completely separate from readers rides which is a courtesy to you our readers. We appreciate your enthusiasm for the magazine and I regret that I have not published your submission. Please look again at the photos you sent, I would bet they just aren't big enough. A file usually needs to be 3-4megs to be big enough.

I really only glance at the mag once in a while, but I know they seem to only care about impreza platform since it is the most popular soob. I have "fleet" of subarus and I wouldn't expect to see them in it. Although an SVX was just in the reader's rides and I do have one... so I don't know. But still, it seems more like "ImprezaSport".

I just saw your website though, and you have put together a great car! check it out guys...

I'm not sure if the pic and list several posts back was a joke or not... but yeah.

...and snow drift.
Like I said I've only picked up 3-4 issues and got sick of em real quick since it was mostly impreza... impreza... something else... ohh yeah, more impreza.
GC8... wrx... Sti... you make it seam pretty diverse... those are all impreza with different trim/power.

Thats just not true. Yes, there are alot of imprezas and yes it is because there is more interest in that model then any other model, but subiesport does a great job of trying to cover as many other models as possible. They even included the Subaru STELLA in this issue which I didnt expect at all...

But the fact is there isnt any other magazine that covers the "other models" in any form what-so-ever...

Maybe its because I'm from the era when there was NO subaru coverage at all here in America in ANY magazine (not to mention no vendors at all, no interest in subaru rally racing, no nothing) that I am glad to see subiesport actually exist in the first place let alone cover as much as they do...

Looks like a great car... I just thought the fact that it was a long typical mod list and impreza was funny. especially when the editor said that wasn't what he was looking for.

I ussually don't like similar to body color wheels, but that is sexay. Really does look great!

There are literally hundreds of car magazines we 'compete' with every day on the newsstand. If we aren't visible, we will cease to exist.

The front page of a magazine is to get attention. This one certainly got yours. Is it going to do what we want in terms of sales? Ask me again in three months when I get the numbers back. But I think it will do well.

As for typos? Yes, there have been a few. Now that the magazine has more than a staff of 1, hopefully that is an area we will improve in.

Ah Ha...! That explains why my submission went unanswered! I didn’t realize the editor of reader-rides is also the owner of “Project 1996 Legacy GT”.

There’s only about a dozen boosted Legacy BD’s in North America and I guess you can’t feature one of the few under readers-rides when the magazine is doing a full section on their own...

For the record I think it’s great to see an old Legacy make on the pages, whether it’s mine or not. But you better build the hell out that thing to keep up with me, cuz I too am on a parallel track to build one hell of a beast!
