Turbo fight

Ok, there is an argument going on about the chriping noise you sometimes hear turbo cars make. We are trying to agree on what makes the noise. I need someone with great turbo knowledge to come in and explain things. Good luck.

I didn't post the same message in two forums. I posted a link to another post. I believe that is different. I didn't mean to cross-post if thats what I did. I just wanted some possibly more knowledgable people to speak up in that thread. How should I do that in the future?

at first I thaught it was another sound they're talking about. it sounds like birds noise also that comes after letting off the gas even at lower rpm's and no boost . here's the deal : I've heard this sound on my turbo integra with external wastegate , my friends turbo miata with external wastegate and most recently on my friends sr20det with NO BOV yet , however the last one has an internal wastegate. I'm not really sure anymore that its the BOV sound , i've been wondering about this noise for ever now. my rs-t doesn't make the sound though. the only thing that I see in common with all the different cars that make that sound is the fact that they all have turbo manifolds that seat the turbo very close to the exhaust ports where the subaru doesn't. on my friends silvia engine , we were wondering if puting the BOV on ,would make the sound go away, However after installing the BOV yesterday, the same sound was still there. the same sound that occurs on other turbo cars with different turbo's and wastegate setups. ohhh well , its not gonna kill anything , and it actually sounds cool.
again , the sound i'm talking about isn't the BOV sound or an anti-lag sound, maybe some of you guys have heard it before.

I've always been led to believe it was the antilag that was causing that sound. And I suppose the wastegate as well...

But I'm not well versed in WRCs so...I'll just keep shush.

It's because the open group and group N rally cars do not have BOV's. BOV's are for street cars and serve no purpose on a race car. The sound is the throttle plate snapping shut and the boost bouncing off of it and back at the turbo. This causes extra stress on the compressor wheel of the turbo, but BOV's vent boost making the system inefficient. It doesn't matter when you're gonna replaced the turbo with every race.

No, I'm pretty sure it's the wastegate. Check the UK board, there was a discussion on this a while back. I get the chittering sound as well on my Deltagate although it's much much quieter. I only can hear it at relatively low rpm - high load shifts.

It seems the car dropped 7/10ths-8/10ths off the 1/4 mile and gained 4mph from just changing the exhaust to a catback exhaust. I thought a cat back exhaust system didn't net much hp gains in Imprezas. I thought the main gains were from the intake itself. I know it's G-Tech but still. Sorry....just sharing my thoughts.
