Mine arrived Saturday and I read it yesterday.

I have to take issue with the X-Games as being the birth of mainstream rallying in the US. European rallying attracted significant US attention back in the 70's (before most of your readers were born). The problem then was a lack of participation from U.S. manufacturers.

The US market share is drastically down today, but you're still looking at relatively few automotive manufacturers who are involved in rallying. Now, if the manufacturers who are throwing away huge amounts of money sponsoring NASCAR decided to get into the act, we could see a sustainable rally audience and US presence. But without more widespread support, it's likely to be another short term fad.

Face it, rally is not popular in the US. Whatever popularity it enjoyed in the 70s is more or less gone and just a small hardcore crowd is what is left of the fan base. And that is mostly just the racers and their crews and some fans.

However, Subaru and their team, thanks mostly to Ken Block and Travis Pastrana are changing that. The key is to get the NASCAR masses to pay attention. The X-games and the cross polination of an Icon like Pastrana will make that happen.

As much as we would all like to think otherwise, 90% of this country think that racing means turning left over and over and that a fast car has a V8 and all those 4-banger ricers are slow and lame.

Of course you get the dude who does a double backflip on his dirt bike to go run around in a lame four-banger and show them, take them by the hand and really show the US in an NBC broadcast just what rally is... then you have instant popularity.

By no means are we saying the X-games is the birthplace of US rally, it will just bring it from the fringe into the limelight.

I think americas A.D.D. needs more of a super-special, side by side battle with the possibility of seeing more than one think crashing. Only after grabbing their attention will they sit down with the program and fill in stage times. Something similar to drifting only in much more dirt and gravel (hello windshield sponsors), with at least two cars running at the same time. Being able to see all or most of the course would help out too. Whadday say?

I tend to agree with busaru.
Stage rally will always live on but euro style rallycross
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...llycross&hl=en
or super-special style rallying would be more sponsor friendly.

Rally needs to do what D1 did. have a rally day, but let the nascar drivers drive the cars. i was watching that d1 vs nascar thing on speed last week. Brought alot of exposure to the nascar crowd. actually seemed like they even enjoyed it. got alot of tv coverage. maybe thatz what rally needs to do.

This thread is for the October issue. Laura, you appear in the December issue, which just started reaching mailboxes, and will be in stores the first week of November.
