Default 2.5L head gasket recall not covered

hey

k well my impreza is at 98,000kms with a blown head gasket. This problem is on all 98-01 2.5L engines and Subaru put an additive in the coolant to help but also extended the head gasket warranty to 8 years/100,000 miles. So i thought i was covered with this issue. Wrong. In Canada, i found out recalls are different for Canada and US and also the recall for the coolant additive happened on both sides of the boarder. The extended warranty is for US only. Iv called subaru of canada and they offered to pay 50%. The only way ill be happy is if the whole thing is covered. If Subaru knows that this is a problem due to their design, it should be covered on either side of the boarder. Anyone have any suggestion on what i should do next? Or had this same problem happen to them????

Thanks
Wojtek

Does this mean on my 2000 I got about 1.5 years of warranty on my head gaskets? Or at least 50% warranty?

technically in the US you would.. subaru will help 50% atleast i guess.. but im goin to fight for the 100% cause it is a known problem and it shouldnt matter on what side of the boarder you are on.
ill keep you guys posted on what happens

yeah, sadly it sa problem with the Phase II engine design itself, even with a new headgasket, you still need to use teh addative or it will leak again. Have you used teh addative? It will stop pretty major leaks, had to use it on a few subys when i was working in the mechanics shop. Worth a try anyways. Good luck on getting it sorted out.

Cheers,
Tim Quinn

So is your car american, or Canadian? Becuase SOA and SOC are two totally different companys in a way. If you car is under the 5 year, 100,000km it should be covered under your subaru warranty. If it's out of warranty, then you should be considered lucky if they'll pay half.

98k with blown head gasket? what did u do?

as far as i have seen, a lot of the DOHC EJ25 has blown head gasket but SOHC EJ25 they usually only have a leak head gasket?! and for those who SOHC that has head gasket problem, the information that i collected is they are using 87 gas, never warm up before they drive, never cool down (let the cooling system cycles) after they drive for a longer trip or after going up a hill, and they do drive hard once in awhile too...

also, i found out if the coolant isn't flush often enough it seems pretty easy to clog the radiator (that lower the cooling efficiency)

yea i dont no, we will see what happens

car is canadian, i do use 87, and i always warm up the car, the the coolant flush was done 25,000kms ago (or 24 months) and it is reccommended every 50,000(30months) .. so there is no reason for this to have happened. ill be fixed soon enough we will see what hapens after

So what is technical detail on this design problem? Or does anyone else know? Just curious that's all - I got my additive and so far no signs of leaking head gasket

Is this the factory Subaru head gaskets? How do aftermarket ones perform?

Well I'm not totally clear on teh details, my understanding it was a problem with the actual engine and not the headgaket. Over time something would shift and the gasket would leak, they fixed it in 2000 I believe when they released teh phase III engine. There must be some suby experts on here somehwere with more info on it.

ticking sound came from the spark plug wires...that's all u need to replace...happened many times before and oddly, seems like #1 is the most popular...

i have only replaced coil pack because the car wouldn't start at all...

hmm... i replaced the wires and everything runs fine.. altho since i got my car back, the tone out of the exhaust is noticably louder.. any ideas as to way.. maybe something to do with the new timing belt??? i dont no

i searched around and found this

the little pins on my coilpack have very little resistance so i believe there is a short circut and need a new one.. atleast according to this
the big plugs where the plug wires go into are fine using this test
