is the lug driven by that 8mm hex head? i just have never seen anything like that except on a euro car.

Oh lol nah, it's a 2 piece lug nut. That's basically a cap for the lug for theft purposes.

Project Kics make a shorter version. The R26 as opposed to the R40 extended versions IIRC.
