Default 2002 wrx overheating issue

hey guys, i have a freind that just purchased a 2002 wrx. it was in an accident beforehand (slight fender bender) and long story short it now has an aftermarket radiator. so here is the problem, it randomly will heat up to about 2/3 or more on the temp gauge. most of the time it sits happily at the halfway mark but every so often it will climb up, my freind pulls over, lets it cool off and usually doesnt have any more problems with it the rest of the day. as you can imagine it is very disconserting and annoying due to the fact that he needs his car. i thought it was a bubble in the coolant, which would explain the temp randomly rising, but the more he looks into the less he is sure thats that what it is. could it be a bad thermostat? the radiator was done not to long ago. thanks for any help or expierinces, he is desperate to resolve this problem.

CL: car heats up randomly for no apparant reason, dont know why.

How many miles on the thermostat? I have seen them become less responsive (faster warm up times, slow to open resulting in overheating) after they get old or get cooked (engine gets overheated) really good once.

What do you guys have for tricks to get the bubbles out of the system?

a larger radiator will cool off the coolant much more quickly and make the thermostat slow to open. get a 160* t-stat and burp the system well.
