Anyone ever hear their car WITHOUT a filter with the box open?

I was looking around trying to figure out how to get the damn silencer off my car (still cant figure out how im gonna do it, so ill get some help from the I-clubers around here) and poped out the air filter and left the box open while I was cleaning it off...

Suddenly had an idea... I wonder what it sounds like like this
(Yes, I know its not safe, but I kept it away from anything that would get sucked in)

OMG! I hope to god that the silencer mod makes the car sound like this!!! (does the cone filter sound like this thats on the imprezars.com site?)

ahh yes... the unrestricted intake... what a nice sound eh?

that is the sound of a "real" engine.... dunno why engineers decided people wouldn't like that sound and added silencers :monkey:

anyways.... the silencer removal mod.... there instructions EVERYWHERE... and all models of impreza's(and most other cars too) follow the same instructions...

take off passenger side wheel... unclip fender lining... pull back... remove what you have to along the way.... (my wrx had a brake cooling duct i had to 1/2 dissassemble..) you will see the silencer... it's thebig plastic box sitting in your fender...

should be 2 bolts to remove....just try looking along the silencer... removing all bolts.... tug a bit.. if it's not free... look for more.

i did this mod to my civic the 2nd day i got it... cuz it just looked useless~!! (back in '95)

and yes.. the car will sound much better IMHO with the silencer gone... but not quite as loud as a funnel type filter and i'm guessing that an open filter box is even louder...

I did that with just an Open Turbo on my car before i got the intake pipe. It sounded awesome to hear the wooosshhh!

Installing my Technik intake back in the day...and I was waiting for my Blitz filter to come in...and it finally came, so I drove to pick it up. Needless to say I turned quite a few heads...on purpose cause I just couldn't resist hearing the loud induction note! Woo~

Yes yes yes, i know all about the "instructions", ive read every topic ever about it...

Its much harder in real life when you dont have a quality jack, the fender is 7 years old and covered with mud, and your too scared your gonna brake something cause you still dont know much about car mechanics

Im going to do it when I go down to Redstar to make a custom short shifter.

throttle plate noise rules as long as it's not FULL throttle plate noise. Gotta love the hiss it makes

Cobb Intake sounds VERY similar to running no filter... its badass

I currently have a ganz flow intake and never noticed any reduction in torque at all coming from the stock silencer. Now if I were to get that cobb intake would I lose any low end or is it sweet at any speed/rpm.

Let me know cause I'm kinda starting to want one.

Silky, here is a paragraph from Cobb's website:

Mounted directly behind the throttle body is the mysterious black plastic plenum whose function has been the subject of much debate. This box was completely empty inside, serving only as a chamber, until mid-1999 when Subaru included a secondary air filter inside. While we haven't discussed the details of this design with the engineers at Subaru, we can make some assumptions as to the reasons of this layout based on some theories behind intake systems. One of the primary reasons for this chamber is to act as a supplemental intake plenum to improve throttle response. When you go from low throttle to wide open throttle, the engine's demand for air increases drastically and the stock intake manifold with it's small plenum lacks the necessary volume to satisfy the engine's demands. To remedy this, Subaru uses this secondary air box as a supplemental plenum to supply this sudden demand of air. This gives us the throttle response we want and keeps our engine happy.

I ran with an open airbox on my old Escort GT once...except I had been driving down a dirt road(fast!!) and the one clip still holding the airbox closed slipped off, letting my K&N fall out into the road(had to go back and look for it). The car actually sounded NICE, so I knew *something* had broken.
