Default Post Track-day thread

Well, I just got home from the track day (stopped in the city for dinners)...and I am wiped!! A lot of driving for the day.

The track day was GREAT! Thanks again to Alidair for setting it up and thanks to Driving Unlimited. They put on a terrific day. The weather was wet but I think it made for a really fun day and a very good learning experience.

It was well worth the money paid and I would definitely do a similar day or different type of day with them again. It was great to push the car (to it's wet weather limits) in a safe environment.

Good to meet some new folks and good to see some old faces again.

If anyone has pics or comments on their day it's be great to hear from people.

Now time for a hot shower and off to bed!

It was a great event.. a bit different from other events that I have been to.. like they don't use flags.. but it was all good.. lotz of sliding around for me.. first time ever spun out on a track too (i have driven in the rain before)..

the importance of trail braking is amplified in rainy track days..

anyone got pics?

I'd also like to say that I was initially a little nervous about the wet, VERY slippery track, but was also a VERY good learning experience. It is much more work (I'm really tired too) keeping the car under control than a dry day, but that is exactly the point - you are always feeling the limits, and you get a LOT of practice making sure your inputs and responses are smooth and measured. Not measured enough once around turn 4... but I always have a challenge there.

Thanks once again Alisdair!

Also, good lapping fun with 4 STi's - myself, J-F, Jamie, and John. Good to meet you guys (again...).

I'd also like to say thanks to Alasdair for an awesome job organising this event. I had a blast; was hoping for rain and it didn't dissappoint.

Was a really good experience, but over far too soon. My last laps (with passenger) behind Mitch were by far my neatest though, so that was a probably good note to end on.

Good to meet you again Mitch. Also nice to see Jamie out on the track.

I would like to thank Alidair for a great event, and Tora for the nice blocking

The wet weather is nice since we don't need to push the car hard to learn. Eventhough the stock RE92 sure provided me with plenty of fun.

I had a lot of fun watching you guys rip around in the wet...and thanks to impulse777 for letting me ride along for all those laps...and to bleevin for letting me hop in for a few as well My car looked so lonely in the pits...the ONLY Subie not on the track Oh well, next year! Thanks for the lunch deal and hook-ups Alisdair! Nice to meet some new faces, and see some of the same old ones tora, you surprised the heck out of me when you remembered my name! haha

My little brother took a bunch of pics that I need to blank out plates for...some of them came out blurry in the rain, but there are a lot of nice ones too. I will try to get them up here ASAP boys! Great fun today.

I learned a lot. How did the auto-x guys relate to driving on the track? It took a bit of time to get used to not stomping on the brakes and judging further distances, compared to a short auto-x track.

Here's Mitch's group. Tora had some oily film on his windshield. I wonder if it was from Jeff's? exhaust? I have more pics to come.

PS: Please tell me if anyone doesn't want their plates shown in the pics.

Ken, thanks for posting that up!! I think the oily film was probably off the track? All the water getting kicked up would have been mixed with the oil from the track I would think...

It was fun learning the track at Mission, in the rain too, and I was able to pinpoint a few things I can improve on at the end of the day. Thanks Alasdair for organizing the event.

He was doing pretty well...the instructors were holding him back it appeared. Also, I think the rain didn't help him much...in the dry, I am sure the Elise would have been more impressive!

Grrr . . . I wanted to take some pics, but I discovered that I had left my camera on overnight and the batteries had died. By the time I had them recharged, the day was over.

I do have some in-car footage that I can post later . . . unfortunately, my "foot-well cam" fell over, so I don't have any sweet heel-toe footage

How 'bout everyone post what tires they were using and how they felt?

RE-070's have 46k km's on them and they performed well in the wet. Trail braking made the steering work well, and I could feel the tires grip back, then I could put on some throttle. ABS never kicked in on moderate braking.

Yoko A032R's, 235/40R17. The track was definitely slick but grip was ok. When we started doing the faster laps grip definitely seemed to improve (or was it confidence) as the tires warmed up...it was easy to break loose on any corner though so the day was all about throttle and brake modulation and nice smooth inputs for steering.

Fuzion ZRIs 225/45/17 (don't laugh, they're made by Bridgestone), around 10-20k of wear, plus another track day (I'll post the actual mileage later). Felt solid and predictable the whole day, although the rear end wanted to step out on turn 4. Staying on the gas through the turn helped with that.

Thanks for a nice day yesterday. Depending on who I talk to, the weather was either cooperative or uncooperative, but most people enjoyed it. I definitely had more fun than I expected to in the rain, and learned a lot more, which was great. FYI: tires = Yoko AVS ES100 with <40% tread - which showed. They are definitely nearing the end of their potential.

It was nice meeting and talking with most of you. This third annual track day drew a group of 10 who had been to previous events, so we're building a nice crowd of regulars - both Subarus and more!

I thought it was a nice mix of cars, and at the last minute, Driving Unlimited decided to arrange groups by car characteristics, since that would determine the proper lines to follow in the rain. They also thought that because of the rain, we'd benefit from closer instruction, rather than simple lapping, so they kept formations throughout the afternoon. That's something that they didn't do in previous years. They didn't open up the track for passing, like last year, but, personally, I didn't find that to be an issue in this weather.

If you get a chance, Driving Unlimited would love to get some feedback from you. If you'd like to remain anonymous, you can email me and I can forward all of our comments to them at once.

I will keep you all on the list and give you priority next year. I'm toying with the idea of doing something earlier in the year (May/June) and leaving room for a possible second event (August/September).
