Default will borla cat-back for 96-01 RS fit 02 RS

hey guys, i've searched around for the last half hour and i'm sure if i searched another 3 hours i'll find the answer but i'm hoping one of you can spare me that agony... i'm sure i'm just using the wrong search words

so exactly like the title says, will this borla cat-back (p/n 14885) for a 96-01 impreza fit my 2002 RS? from what i've read i believe many exhaust components are interchangeable between 1996 and 2003 but before i shell out a few hundred i'd like to be a bit more certain...

thanks guys!

As I've posted several times in this very forum in the past week alone, any catback for any Impreza 96-01 will fit any n/a Impreza 02 and up. The only difference from the pre-02 to the 02+ cars is one hanger right before the muffler, and you don't need it. I have the Borla 14885 on my 05 RS and it fits perfectly, and I just left that hanger out.

Here's what it will sound like with stock headers, stock cats:

And with Borla/Borla-replica headers and stock cats:

It's been close to a year and I still haven't got around to doing a high flow cat setup, I'll post em up when I get em.

I really would like this exhaust over the OBX one.. It just scares me because it has no resonator and I do like 60 miles per day in the car and I had a muffler w/ stock headers that droned terrible. You have a wagon though falco which is more susceptible to drone than a sedan... With the ebay replicas which I just got this week in the mail, how is this borla catback in the car? I really am not a big fan of noise in the car from exhaust.. a very mellow, mild rumble which won't make me have to really increase the radio volume is ok.. but is there bad drone with this non resonated setup? I would keep the stock cat section also.

I drive 1000 kms (625 miles) per week, no drone on the highway at all, and then when you're accelerating on the highway in 5th gear, it's just a sweet burble from behind you.

With just the catback (stock header, stock cats), the drone was pretty bad. Not unbearable, but it was definitely there. Keep in mind I have a wagon. If you have a sedan or coupe the backseat takes out a bunch of the drone. Just laying a blanket in the spare tire well killed a good deal of it. So I definitely wouldn't worry about it if I had a sedan or coupe.

The instant I put the header on (still with stock cats) the highway drone was GONE. Nothing. Rumbles on up to highway speed, set the cruise, and then quiet. Road noise and wind noise are much more of an issue. I'm assuming it's because of how the borla-style header breaks up the exhaust pulses.

I'm fully expecting to get a little more drone out of the exhaust when I change out the catpipe for a high-flow unit, but nothing unbearable, and welding in a resonator to the Borla midpipe isn't a big deal.

well that is pretty encouraging. I really like the way it sounds on your car. One last question before I make my final decision on a catback. You say there is no drone while cruising on the highway... On my last setup, which had stock headers and cats, the thing droned like a son of a bitch from the second the car was started until it was turned off. However, the drone on the higher RPM's was less intrusive than the lower ones. Around town while accelerating it was very bad. Also cruising around town between say 1200-2200 RPMS was probably the worst drone of all. How is your setup around town in these situations? THX falcon for the help.

Around town I love it. It does "drone" a little more around town...but I put "drone" in quotes for a reason. It's not really a constant, mind-bending hum with the headers. It's a rumble. It's not super loud. You can have a conversation at a normal level even when accelerating (and by that I mean taking off from a light in, as James May would say, a "christian" manner. Before I got the headers, it was very loud and very droney all over the place, but the headers completely changed everything about this catback. I came to the conclusion that Borla designed their catback and their headers to be used together, because they really sound and act completely different when they're used together.

The startup isn't loud. You hear it, but it doesn't shake the house or anything. I'd compare it to the guy with a Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel with stock exhaust. It's no louder than that. And I'm talking about the exhaust, not the clattering from the engine bay. God I hate diesels.
