Has anyone done this for a new vehicle?? I am finding that just south of the border there are some VERY appealing prices for 07s.
What I know: - there will be an export tax applied to vehicles coming into Canada - I will have to arrange for documents to be at the border for three days what I don't know: - How are warranties transferred? - How financing is arranged? It must be worth while if these prices are anything to go by - over $15k saving from over here to a 2hr drive away. Any comments?

Do a search. It's been covered many times. Try searching the Canadian forums too.

No one has ever done it. It would violate the properties of the space time continuum. It is not possible. Vanquish the thought from your head.
....or do a search. |

Certainly not, I agree.
The margins are a lot smaller for a WRX though (STI is well out of my price range both here or south of the border). |

Pain is perceived relatively. Some asses are wider than others, for instance.

if the VIN starts with a J youre looking at 6.1% duties at the boarder, the boarder will also only charge GST, when you go to ICBC you will be charged PST, if the car has AC the boarder will charge a fee of $100 (yes just for having the button, even if the AC is broken or removed, its all about the button, so if youre like me youll hide the button somehow, or rip out the climate control face first, tell them you got a better deal cuz of the missing parts, LOL) .......
to make transfering the car into your name easier, in addition to the signed title youll want to contact the local DMV and get a copy of the last known owner of that car (i dont know why ICBC is this anal), also have a written out bill of sale hand signed by the seller to confirm the value and that its a legal sale, i also brought an ICBC transfer form filled out by the seller (yes they still wanted all the other crap) ..... if you choose to keep the plates of your car from whatever state (insurance is different out there and they may let you use them) DONT tell ICBC cuz they asked me and took my plates away they REFUSED to register it unless i gave them back (they were supposed to be a souvenier for me) ..... check the RIV for a list of cars that are legal to import as some cars canada will not import PERIOD as they dont meet our safety standards (example i wanted to import a 2002 toyota MR2 spyder, but toyota refused to meet our safety requirements and only circulated them in the states, there for im not allowed to register it into canda, you DONT want ot be caught wasteing your time and money on this!!) ...... BUT ALSO some cars are allowed in canda from the US ONLY WITH modifications!! sometimes cheap (ie daytime runners) and sometimes not so cheap (ie complete bumper and bracing removed and swapped with canadian standard parts) ..... so DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! for cars YOUNGER than 15yrs old you will be REQUIRED to do a $200 inspection (within something like 15days of import) ..... in ADDITION to a out of province inspection (approx $100) ....... these inspections are also required before ICBC will register the car to you..... if its older than 15 yrs you only need the out of province inspection |

Yes, the J means its made in Japan, some subarus start with J and others start with numbers (i have no clue what the number means or how that affects it in regards to duties) but for SURE J= 6.1% duty on the value of the car

If you are seriously planning on importing one from the US. Adopt an attitude like you are buying speculative stocks.
Expect to lose everything. (okay not in such a dramatic way) But expect to have delayed or no warranty work, if it should ever arise. SOA and SOC are not as reciprocal as it may seem. If you have time and patience and find the right Canadian dealer, all should be resolved in due time. Aside from that all is fine. |
