Question Power output of stock stereo?Direct speaker replacement options?

Just got an '06 WRX wagon. I'm considering upgrading the speakers. I really don't want to change anything else. Spoke with crutchfield. Rep said that I needed to confine my search to speakers that only required 2 watts because the factory head unit only puts out 2 or 3. The speakers I found that I would like to get require 6 front and 4 rear. Was he right about the factory unit's output? Anyone have recommendations for replacements? Thanks.

He's full of ****. The stock stereo doesn't do much, but it's a lot more than 2 Watts. What speakers did you find, sensitivity is more important that most people think, and will tell you what you should expect out of speakers.

In additon, speaker power rating is more of an issue in overpowering than underpowering. Yes, if you hooked up a 200watt speaker to a 10watt amplifier it may not produce sound as well as a 50watt speaker, but that ties into the first reply. Look for speakers with over 90 signal-to-noise ratio s/n.

The speakers I was interested in were the Polk db650 for the front and the Polk db400 for the rear.

I think a number of people have run those on the stock deck no problem.

I have Blaupunkt Overdrives in mine. I think the PCx series fits also. Can't beat them for the money for a stock system. Should you decide to replace the stock system and amp everything - which you should - the Overdrives can blow if you turn up the bass setting too much. Then again that's what subs are for

I would say the stock radio is closer to 15w-20w. Polk DB speakers will run perfectly fine as they are a pretty effecient speaker.
