Default Problem pumping gas & CEL P1443

I have a p1443 code (vent control solenoid). When I try to pump gas, the handle clicks like the tank is full, but its not even close. It clicks as soon as I pump for a couple seconds. Im guessing something is clogged. Where should I start checking for clogs/problems. I went to the dealer once, and he said the solenoid was fine, checked the wire for voltage, which was good, then said there was no ground. I found that hard to believe... and then the started leaning towards a new ECU. Car is not under warranty, so where should I start checking?

Why is it not under warranty? Are you already over the miles?

In the old days, gas tanks vented directly to the outside air. Nowadays, to minimize pollution, the tank vents through a charcoal canister which absorbs and stores the gas fumes. At certain times when the engine is running, lines are opened to suck the gas fumes out of the canister into the engine and burn them. Presumably your code relates to this system of solenoids controlling the flow of fumes to/from the canister. My guess is that the system is stuck in "burn off" mode, with a valve/solenoid closed blocking the gas tank from venting into the canister. I'd try to get a hold of the shop manual emissions control section for your year.
If you've got the problem whenever you try to fill up with gas, that should be something a dealer can work with. Perhaps a visit to an independent Subaru-specialist mechanic is in your future?

Good info armand1. Im checking out a 2004 STi service manual. Its a salvage title, so dealer maintenance is out of the question. From looking at the plumbing for the Evap system.. It looks like either a bad vent solenoid, which vents the pressure/fumes from the gas tank then to the charcoal box...or the gas tank pressure sensor. Whichever it is, I think the vent is caught closed, forcing me to do battle with gas tank pressure as I pump gas. I can let it drizzle in, but wont pump full blast.
