Default Is my new 06 Impreza WRX driving "normal"?

ok, so i noticed the car at first gear or second gear cruising at slow speeds is kind of shaky whenever i change the throttle(seems like its only smooth at slow speeds when in constant throttle), is this normal? whenever im cruising around 25mph in like 2nd or 3rd gear and i let the gas off the car starts braking slowly too. The RPMs always seem to be low so it is kind of tough driving slow. im still breakin in the car, thanks.

Normal...But purchase and load the Stage 1 map from a Cobb AP, and it'll smooth out. Not completely, but there is a marked improvement.
hen, add a downpipe and catback exhaust and load the Stage 2 map. Smooth and MUCH faster!
(= MUCH more fun!)

Hoped not to get flamed to much for hi-jacking this thread but did you notice performance differences going AP Stage 1 on your WRX? I've looked at the graphs on the Cobb website and it looks like it fattens and flattens the toque curve out but I think the bigger changes occur on prior year WRXs.

And to answer the OP, yes that slightly off wobble you feel is just that wonderful boxer engine. After 7 months it still catches me off guard sometimes as my four cylinder experiences have been with Honda or Mazda.

Thanks - mike

I think the rough idle, or stumble is from it running lean at the bottom end, no?

A stage 1 car has much more usable power and feels stronger all over the power band. The top end power isn't improved much, but boost comes on early and is much smoother.

I just flashed my new AP for Stage 1 a couple of days ago, and I can already feel the difference accelerating and is definitely a smoother ride. The jerking motion when you let off the gas is almost non-existant now.

People on this forum have said it takes a little while for the engine to adjust to the new MAP settings, so it can only get better from here. Definitely recommend you invest in the AP if you want to smooth out your ride.

So worth the funds? Christmas is coming and AP would make a nice stocking stuffer.

Should be OK.
Is it an auto or manual? If you think it's "braking" too much, take it back to the dealer and have them look at it under warranty.

Also, + elevintybillion on the Cobb AP STG1. For the '04 it makes a huge diff in drivability.

Stg1 on my '06 was a very noticeable improvement over stock. Much more power down low. Made the car actually fun to drive. When I first got the WRX it felt a little sluggish (Granted I was used to a 300hp Z28). Stg1 one helped with that and stg2 really makes me smile. Now I want a bigger turbo/intercooler because the TD04 runs out of breath too early for me. will it ever end? Prolly not

I thought the difference when I went to stage one was really nice. A little more power, but everything was so smooth in how the power came on and in everyday driving.

its a manual and no it doesnt brake too much just slightly slowly slows down to around 1k RPM i actually kind of like it because when i let the gas off i want it to slow down anyways, but i was just wondering if it hurts the car if not then its good.

hm, cobb doesnt seem to have stage 1 upgrade for 06 wrx models

for the OP, that is perfectly normal in any manual tranny car and is more pronounced with AWD. it's engine braking. the engine is connected directly to the wheels and the lower gears produce more engine braking. that's why if you want a smooth ride in a manual you have to be smooth with the throttle. there's no torque converter to absorb sloppy footwork.

+1, the engine is slowing down the car. When you take your foot off the gas the wheels are turning the motor. Obviously that is alot of resistance so it slow the car down.

Alot of people utilize engine braking instead of hitting the brakes. Example. Your cruising in 4th gear, and a turn is coming up, you clutch in and drift for a bit the shift into 3rd or most likely second and pull your foot off the clutch normally and the car will start slowing down real fast, you turn then press the gas to acel. So you did all of that without touching the brake. Although with this car and its transmission I usually just brake to the speed I want and shift unless I'm on a track. This is normal for all manual transmission....

As a side note, I'd keep the car above 2000 RPM's. You have no usible power less then that and it just waste alot of gas trying to accelerate from less then 2000rpm.

You mean they're out of stock? Because they certainly do make APs for our '06 WRX with the stage 1 and 2 MAPs.

do the accessports have any chance of screwing up your car somehow, and wouldnt turning boost to go at lower RPMs make your gas mileage really really bad than it already is

you will notice if you drive around in higher rpms (above 3.5k) your car will be much smoother
