Default Valve adjustment w/ solid shimless lifters?

Does anyone have a clue how to adjust valve clearance on what appears to be a shimless solid lifter? (EJ20K) .

Do I need to remove the entire cylinder head to adjust the gaps between the lifter and the cam?

Thanks

You may want to inquire on Subysports or some similar overseas sight. Our solid lifters have large (32mm) shims on the top of the bucket. It is common to have selective shims on the bottom side of the bucket (on top of the valve stem) but I have not seen it yet on a Subaru. If this is the case it requires removing the cams to adjust.

SubyTechMaster,

Good point.

I have actually removed the camshaft now, but it looks like I have to compress the valve spring and remove a retainer to get the lifter out. There is definitely no shim between it and the cam. Dang!

There is NEVER a shim under the valve spring.

When the 2.5L twin cam was intrduced in the US in '96 it had hydraulic lash adjusters. Have you considered this possibility? The Cam Followers look very similar except with no shim on top.

When looking at the outside of the head, observe the lines that are cast in the head. If the lines are one direction only (from crank outward) it has HLA's. If the lines form a cross-hatch it is solid lifters.
