Angry Exhaust Smell '05 WRX

Is it common to smell strong exhaust smells emanating from underneath the car?

We'll be in slow moving traffic or sitting at a light and the fumes will come through an open window or come through the AC. No dummy lights have come on and the car seems to be pulling strong.

No mods, stock with about 29k miles.

I never had that problem with my stock '02 and I don't get anything with my stock 06 either. I'd take it in and have them look at it.

Is it a "raw fuel" smell? Sulferish? Or just an excess of the normal exhaust fumes? I remember hearing people complain about a "raw fuel" smell back in the day. But I don't remember if they ever came up with a fix. If it's sulferish in smell I would think you would get a CEL (usually failed cats)... I agree with Anub1s though, I'd take it in and have them look at it. (The stock wrx tends to run rich anyway so I wouldn't be supprised it it's normal)

maybe something is leaking on it or some debris is stuck on the exhaust? i've seen birds make some nasty smells.

If it smells like a burning match (sulphur) it means you're using crappy quality fuel with a very high sulphur content. Stop using crap gas.

Thanks for the responses. It's not a sulfur smell. It just smells like raw exhaust which I recall from my '02 which had a TBE/UP, etc.

I'll bring it in and let them see.
