Default Stock tires: good performance on snow/ice?

Hi all. I'm driving across wa, id, mt for X-mas which will take me across 4/5 mountain passes. How are the stock tires? Should I pony up for some snow tires that I will only use for a week out of the year or does the abs/vdc combo kick a$$. I'm an experienced bad weather driver, so if the stock tires are sufficient I'd rather not waste my money on marginally better tires.

Thanks

I heard they are not the best in snow, however I have not driven ours in the snow yet. They are M+S which is a compromise tire.

As stated, they are decent in the snow. We've driven ours in upstate NY (in the mountains) during snow storms. We managed just fine. Don't be stupid with them and you will be as well

if you only need them for one trip they are probably adequate especially if you still have lots of tread. I was able to experience driving them in snow before I got Nokian WRs which Inow run all year and the difference between a winter tire and those lousy Goodyears in snow is night and day!
