As of last month, I am a Subaru salesman. I was talking to the New England SOA dealer rep, and he confirmed that for 08 the impreza will be a 5 door hatchback. No word on the availability of a 3 door, but given Subaru's new commitment to 5star crashworthiness, i highly doubt they'll compromise the structural integrity by making a 3 door (longer front doors needed to get access to the rear seats push the B pillars back, making the cabin weaker and more prone to flex). Anyway, all that said, he couldn't tell me anything specific about the aesthetics of the car.

I guess the other question is, will a traditional sedan still be offered? Frankly, I hope not.

i have no affiliation with subaru and i am not a salesman, but i garuntee the sedan will be back. money talks, the sedan outsells the wagon (in the US) currently, its not going anywhere.

i still think the camo'd car we've seen in the spyshots is the next wagon/hatch/whateveryouwannacallit, and the sedan is still under wraps.

don't know. The SOA rep didn't say, and I didn't ask. My assumption was that the 5 door hatch would adequately fill the needs of both the sedan and the wagon. It's a smart move on Subaru's part. As a salesman, I know that having both models can be a bit trying. Not so much for the 2.5 i Impreza, but for the WRX. The wagons last about 10 seconds on our lot, but Subaru builds a lot fewer wagons. Which makes it harder to get one. And people who want WRX wagons need the extra space and often won't settle for the sedan. Smacking both of them into one model means it'll be easier to sell volume and appeal to more customers with one product than two.

Though, depending on what rumor articles you read at certain online car news sites, there is talk of both 3 door and 5 door hatches as well as a sedan. That seems pretty dumb from a cost-to-build standpoint, but you never know...

I need a wagon (Impreza sized and not the Legacy sized) and absolutely don't want a sedan. However, there are lots of people who like sedans and I hope Subaru offers one.

Bob, you don't have to buy a sedan if you don't like sedans.

Well just think; if it had been some podunk town between Houston and Lake Charles, she would have though it was an Aston Martin. Guess all things are relative...and Subaru styling can find love somewhere at least.

I still cling to the theory that the MY05+ Legacy designer was adopted.

The new all-wheel-drive Subaru Impreza WRX has also been seen out in public - and reports say it comes with a completely new look. Subaru has been testing the WRX in the us disguised in a Legacy sedan body. But a naked four-door hatchback WRX was spotted near a test track in Arizona. There are suggestions Subaru will drop the Impreza name but hang on to the WRX nomenclature when it launches the car in 2008.
Watch out 'Zona subie fans, there's a nekkid 08 wrx in your neighborhood!

So my reasons are purely for marketing purposes.

If you offer an Impreza "sedan" that's close to same size of the Legacy, Legacy sedan sales could suffer. Many customers will think that the "newer" (and cheaper) Impreza sedan will be a better value than the the "older" (and more expensive) Legacy sedan. So by not offering an Impreza sedan, those who want a sedan might move up to the slightly more expensive Legacy sedan.

My thinking is from SOA's perspective, not the customer's perspective.

yea but that'll be in 2010 the redesign in 08 wont be a size change will it? i was just thinkin it was a facelift before the '10 redesign..

and from my standpoint, subaru will offer a sedan too, they can't afford to lose all the impreza 2.5i, wrx, and sti sedan form... especially in the U.S., the sedan cannot be lost... im pretty sure theres gonna be a 5 door hatch/wagon, and a sedan, but i just question the 3 door hatch.. it just seems a little unrealistic at the moment.. i would love it but i think it would be nice to just see the 2.5i and WRX offered in hatch forms (think Golf, and Civic SI fighters)... of course i'd love a sti 3 door hatch too, but i think it seems unlikely

One thing most people don't think about with sedans is the back seat. Sure the distance to your front seat might be about the same, but ever sit in the back of a sedan and then sit in the back of a wagon? What's the difference if you every have passengers or have to ride in the back of a sedan or coupe? I know for me at 6'1" my head has an interference fit with most sedan headliners, while I can usually get away comfortably in wagons or sport hatches like my Protege 5.

Too bad more people don't think about that concept. I know it's usually the last thing on most peoples minds that there is the room in a wagon, but when I ride in a sedan it's like damn it's cramped back here.

Just an inference.

I like the wagons for their practicality. If a wagon body style is offered along with a Sedan in a particular model, I will unhesitatingly prefer the wagon, even if it costs a bit more than the Sedan variant.

The current Impreza wagons were a bit crippled by Subaru due to their narrower track when compared to the Sedan. When you hear about Aluminium suspension bits, you sit up and then realise that those are only available on the Sedans and that the equivalent wagons have been denied them. Also the STi never came as a wagon, which was pitiable in my opinion.

Bob, you nailed it right on the head. I don't think I could've said it better myself.

Subaru's problem is they blend model lines so much that a majority of it loses its identity. Look at the Outback wagon and the Legacy wagon, they are both near identical. Sure they truly ARE the same car underneath, but suspension height aside, even the body looks 90% or more the same between the two vehicles (Really only ground cladding is different).

I think the entire product line should go more simple something like this:

Near Future:

Large SUV - Tribeca
Wagon - Outback
Sedan - Legacy
Sports Coupe - Impreza/WRX.

Down the road:

Pickup - New car based on the Tribeca chassis, but is very much a completely different vehicle.

Large Luxury Sedan - Based on Tribeca chassis, but is very much a completely different vehicle.
