Default Heater core removal

The heater core on my 95 Impreza is leaking. I can see where the coolant lines go through the firewall...kinda in the center of the dash.

So what all needs to be removed to get to this thing? It looks like half the car has to come off. I've removed the radio and glove box and all I see is a series of black connected boxes...I'm not sure what all I have to get to to get the core out.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

Tyson

No one has any idea? I desperately need to know...I can't figure out how to get the core out of the car...lots of stuff in the way. And there is no dealer within 100 miles

do you have a Chilton's manual or something of the sort?

As far as I know, though, you are going about it properly...since it is behind the firewall, the only way I would think to get at it is from taking the dash apart...

Naah I don't have the Chilton's. What manuals are available for the Impreza? My local AutoZone is no help.

Thanks,

Tyson

Well, it's a little spendy, but well worth it. Get the Subaru complete set of service manuals. It'll cost $228.60+shipping, but they have every piece of information you need. Just be glad you don't have a '98 or '99 .

Does the car have AC? IF so the heater core is going to be part of that same unit. The heater core and AC unit will be stacked sideby side and connected together. You basically have to remove the whole thing. If you can figure out how the heater "black box" and the AC "black box" are connected and get it undone, you could just pull the heater. I have never been able to actually do that, but good luck.

heater cores are a pain.

Yes the car has A/C. I have gotten to the fan and evaporator unit. The heater is behind them (directly behind the radio). I just can't figure out how to get it out without removing all kinds of other stuff.

Basically, you will have to remove the complete instrument panel from the car. Some cars it comes out as an assembly, some cars a piece at at time. I've never done an Impreza so I'm not sure about it. Usually, a good rule of thumb is that if you have a pass side airbag, the whole instrument panel will have to come out as an assembly, after taking off a few trim pieces to access various
fasteners. It doesnt have to come all the way out, just back far enough to get the HVAC assembly out. You may (almost definantly will) have to discharge the a/c as well, as the evaperator coil will come out in the same assembly. This is not a small undertaking. It is illegal to vent the refrigerant to the atmosphere, even R134a, the new stuff. It is also quite expensive, 10-30 bucks per pound, depending on where you live.
If you are unsure of what you are doing, seriously consider having a professional do it for you, or it could turn into a real nightmare. Good luck.
