Question Need Help... Please Advise!

Hey, I live in Odessa Tx... way out west. I am selling my house and should get the money in about a month or so, I will be selling my camaro and getting a wrx. I can't afford an sti ( I WISH) so I'd like to modify a wrx. Price around 15,000 would be great. Would it be cheaper to find a low miles wrx for around 15,000... stock, or a high miles (100,000+) wrx for around 9 or 10K?? I would then have to replace the engine and tranny and probly a few other things which would robly bring my total up to about 15K or MORE?? I have had a 1986 Mustang,4 camaros, 2 1974 dusters, a 1970 Chevelle, and a few suv's and such ... all cars were v8's and i've never had even a v6. I've never had a japanese car other than my 98 skyline (turbo but only rear wheel drive ...) I shared with a buddy while stationed on Okinawa Japan. I have rebuilt a few motors, but only old school 70's american technology, and I feel I'd have to learn too much too fast to work on the WRX right away, so if I go the Stick a new motor in it (being performance minded...) what shortblock should I use, and what is a good shop to do the work. Please give me any advice you can please.

I was 3rd Recon @ Camp Schwab and leased a rwd skyline as well.

I would get an Sti built block. They are already very good in stock trim. Throw some rally gears in the tranny, put a nice FMIC or TMIC in there and a bigger turbo with some Sti injectors, Walbro 255 Fuel pump and some engine management, up and down pipe.

You will get into the low 12's with this.

Used WRX with high miles, then buy V7 engine and tranny and swap it in. Bulletproof 12s.

Costs vary. Search for EJ207 on this site.

oh, so it's only a 2.0?? would it be more complicated going to a 2.5 sti motor, or just more expensive? driveshaft differences?

that is a good idea, but you don't have to do a swap with a v7 STi block and tranny to get low 12's.... there a TONS of 2 Liter WRX's out there that run lower than that, that are stronger than STi in a lot of ways.

Take Phooey for example.... he still runs the hell out of his 2 Liter block and I'm pretty sure it's strong as hell.

just get an 04/05 with the 2.5L and build it up.... you should be able to get the car for less than 15K and dump about 10K into it and it'll tear up a lot of STi's..... low 12's is a fast car no matter which way you look at it.... STi's are expected to be faster than a WRX..... go for the shock value..... It's just a WRX, not an STi... Definately do the gears though.... you'll need them.

Thats my 2 cents worth.... not too technical, but a darn good story I thought.

Holy ****. Please STOP THE STUPID. The EJ205 is not a strong block and building up the internals does not make it stronger. Its OPEN ****ING DECK! Unless you're filling it with cement or aluminum putty, you're not gonna make it any stronger. A V7 swap will be bulletproof, much stronger than the EJ257 found in the STI. Its proven, look it up. The EJ205 at the same kind of power levels will pop in no time flat.

He was trying to stay on a budget. A 2.5 Sti Block for $1600-$1800, Where are you from? Engine Logics in Houston, Kingpin in Dallas can put them in.

STI block, thats good too. But bwaxman saying the EJ205 is good for making power? Thats just plain not true.

I can place a glass on the ground, and then throw a handful of rocks up in the air and one or two will probably fall in the glass. One of those rocks would be your engine. Chances are, building up a EJ205 will result with a blown engine. I can name 8 off the top of my head.

I want a Version 7 engine which is a EJ207 and some gears... about the gears, keep the 5 speed and add gears will make it strong enough? i heard they were weak ( is it just the gears?) or do in NEED an sti 6 speed or some other heavy duty trans. and seriously i will drive to freeking canada if i have to but who should do this project for me?? SHOPS anyone... closer the better I really appreciate the advice, i'm sure you guys are saving me tons of money down the line here.

do some research.... what do you think there was before the STi short block? What was there before the 2L short block.... how about a 300whp 2.5i or 2.2 or 1.8.....

You just simply don't know.... and BTW.... it's doesn't take a Turbo to make the power either..... but you prolly wouldn't know anything about NA power.... would you?

Yeah. You wanna know how many blocks the fastest guys went through? I KNOW the number was greater than one. You know how long those NA converted to boost engines last? Not long. Talk to Larry Ganz, talk to

Um, we're talking about a turbo car here. And in turbo applications, peak power basically IS determined by the turbo size. An example? The 02-05 WRX had SAE power of 227hp. The 06+ WRX? 230hp. Why does the 2.5 engine with the same sized turbo make about the same HP? Because the bigger engine changes the area under the curve, not the peak of it.

Why wouldn't I know anything about NA power? I mean, its not like I built a race car using a NA motorcycle engine, have worked with alot of two-stroke NA engines and helped work on a rally team that used a NA Subaru engine. Oh wait, I did do all of that.

usdm ej257 STI 2.5l
jdm ej207 WRX/STI 2.0l

the jdm is the one you want but will be the most expensive
