Default 98 Legacy stumbling, changed ignition coil

Hey, I'm car *dumb*.

With that said, my mother in law's Legacy Outback 1998 base model (manual transmission) "stumbles" very badly when you try to accelerate and the RPM's are below 2k.

Not just bogging, but really bad missing/stumbling.

So, I looked at the ignition coil and one of the connecters was fouled, so I replaced it.

It is still doing it.

Is the next step to change the plugs and wires?

When was the last time they were changed? Is the check engine light on?

Funny you mention that, the check engine light came on today after a week of this stumbling behaviour.

Don't know the last time they were changed, this is a "new" car for my mother in law. (She purchased about a week ago)

I would replace the spark plugs and wires then, especially because you have no history of them being done. Also make sure that you put the correct ones in. Subarus are touchy when it comes to plugs.

Also, get the check engine code pulled....that will help put you in the right direction.

Thank you, is the dealer the best place to go for the "right" plugs, or does autozone or whatever carry them and I just need to be specific about which ones I need?

Got the plugs and wires changed. Problem went away.

Now onto the emergency break not gripping tightly enough...

Thanks Rexy you were very helpful!

The emergency break either needs adjusting or you need rear brakes.

Your welcome.....although I didn't get to answer your last question

You can get the "proper" plugs other places than the dealer. Your owners manual tells you which ones are best.
