c/n's: Crazy French daredevil tries to set downhill bicycle record by riding down a somewhat smooth volcanic cone on a bizarre looking "custom" bicycle. The head tube separates and he effing PUMMELS his face into the surface, then pinwheels himself a few times, landing in a heap. Multiple fractures but he lives.

Why in the hell this idiot didn't just start with a Karpiel Armageddon or Intense M1 is beyond me.

Or an RM-9 or a Norco DH or an Orange... or any number of stock high-end DH bikes.

I guess a stock bike would be too "slow" but those tri-spoke carbon wheels are a dead giveaway that something bad is going to happen. Yikes.

Wow.

172Km/h on gavel face first...

He's lucky that's all that happened. When I was 10 I had a buddy bail on his bike into a gavel patch, he wasn't even going that fast. Ended up having 4 rocks embedded in his knee and spent the night in a hospital. Blood EVERYWHERE.

Hell, I flew off my bike drag racing another bike, and shifting to the last gear(had to have been around 90kph), I hit a small rock (we were on a side street), flew over the handlebars, and broke my collarbone. The bike was fine though .

looks like a fork or steerer tube failure. Other than that it looks like one of those custom jobs that look more like a construction beam than a bike.

This was the early 90s IIRC, and downhill bikes back then were crappy full suspension bikes with 3-4 inches of travel. The first generation Judy DH shock had 3.25" travel.

Heh, same thing kinda happened to me. I was 10-12, went down a steep street and couldn't slow down before the corner at the end (I had been doing 30-35mph). Somehow I made it around the corner and ended up on the sidewalk - I was good until I ran into a bush that was protruding onto the sidewalk (damn understeer). I pulled a superman over the handlebars, slid across two lawns (including gravel trim) and came to a stop.

Good times, eh?
