I thought it was an aftermarket BOV, but as I started looking into getting the stock BPV and trying to see which BOV I had, it looked to me like the BOVs and whatnot were way larger in diamter than what I had (more like tennis ball diameter).
What I have is about quarter sized diameter and it says TurboXS. It has a small hose connecting the bottom of it that comes from under the intercooler, and a small hole on top. All signs still point to BOV, it just seemed odd that I couldn't find it anywhere and that everything I saw looked much larger. Also it doesn't really make a very loud noise. There's kind of a whoosh, but I can't tell if it's the normal whooshing of the intake or something else. It's not very pronounced. Attached is a picture of where this is mounted in my engine bay (it is not my car...) http://i14.tinypic.com/4ckcdc4.jpg What all EXACTLY do I need to get the stock BPV back if this is really a BOV? I see people talking about elbow connections or something, I don't know what that is, I just need to know EVERYTHING I need to revert it to stock. Thanks

That's not a BOV. What you see there is a Manual Boost Controller... I think.

crap. that doesn't sound good. don't those need to have proper tuning for reliable use? my car has turboxs engine management too. do these work in conjunction or what?

he's saying about the part that he circled, he is also saying how it might be a mbc, so lets wait and see what his actual engine bay looks like |

Yes, thanks. I do try to do as much reading as possible. As a matter of fact, reading the BOV FAQ and the attached How-To on installing the intercooler hoses and BOV tipped me off that maybe what I had wasn't a BOV. However, I could not be sure as I am a NOOB. The next step would be to ask someone... People are USUALLY another good resource as they can sometimes be a reliable way of getting information when it is not documented somewhere clearly. In this particular case, I think this method has failed, which is unfortunate, as it is in the NOOB forum.

It looks like this picture of the basic TurboXS boost controller, but doesn't have that valve on the side, only on the bottom.
http://www.turboxs.com/uploaded_images/333.jpg I will try to get actual pictures of my car, but I don't have a camera. I'll have to wait until tonight when I can borrow my girlfriend's. (The picture in the original post is NOT my car, just a picture I got from google images so I could show WHERE in the engine bay the part in question was mounted) |

IMO the OP is right on for wanting to learn about what he has...... He's definitely not going the wrong way about this.

I think my EM only has a normal stage II map. So this sort of thing does need to be tuned in conjunction with the EM? What if I wanted to get rid of it? Can't boost be controlled just by the EM? Is it easy to remove?
I want my STi to last a while. It runs well now, but I am concerned about future reliability. I probably should have done more research on mods before i purchased this car. It might be interesting to note I got the wastegate ported because I thought I had boost creep from my TBE. It seems to settle on 1bar now like it's supposed to, but was the boost actually more a result of the controller than the TBE!? It was hitting 1.5 bar before. |

i have an 04 w/ the turbo xs MBC and that is not it... i have that same piece mounted in the same spot. i'm not sure what the piece is exactly but it is a stock device
here is a pic of my engine bay w/ my MBC mounted in the same spot and you can see it's much larger than the piece you have there now... my MBC covers that piece so it's really hard to see in the picture but i guarantee you it's there ![]() |

From that picture, the BOV is right under where the red "i" on STi is painted on your I/C. Its brass colored and round. It has a little hose conecting it.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I do have the stock BPV in that case, and I'm also pretty sure that what I have is a TurboXS boost controller. I guess I just need to do some more reading on boost controllers now.

he was asking a simple question... i suggest YOU might want to give the manual a read once. You obviously haven't, as the standard subaru manual included in every car makes no mention of a blow off valve. Better yet, I'm 99% sure the shop service manuals do not mention BOV's either. Do some research, stock subaru's do NOT come with a blow off valve, so no, it is NOT in front of the intercooler. and finally, since you caught me a on good day to rant, in a custom setup there is no reason the BPV or BOV needs to be bolted to the intercooler anyway. You could just as easily have it anywhere you want, and just run pipe to it. |

Its an ABC which comes with the turbo xs utec. Its not a mbc or a bov. LOL Now start reading your TurboXS Utec manual and you got a lot of learning to do.

Yes, that's it!! Thank you! I am relieved that it is a part of the EM and not yet another potentially damaging mod. Unfortunately, I don't have the manual for any of the mods on my car, so this is why I was not able to identify it.
This is a great relief actually that I have neither an aftermarket BOV or boost controller, as I have read subbies don't take well to either of those mods. Thanks! |

DARN IT PEOPLE!!! STOCK EQUIPPED WRX/STI's DON'T HAVE BOV's. WE HAVE A BPV ( by-pass valve).
The thing recirculates. It doesn't let off into the atmosphere. |
