Default VEL-PRO vs OEM VC Gaskets (and other small questions)

Hey guys, still new to the impreza and need to square away a few things before I feel 100% comfortable going ahead with some maintenance.

Just got a 2000 OBS with the 2.2L. Other than the obvious crack in the radiator near the cap (ordered a new one, will be here Tuesday), I also noticed a pretty major oil leak (about a half a shot glass per day). After tracking the mess to what looked like the VC gaskets (both sides) I also pulled off the plug wires I could reach and found lots of oil in those as well.

Correct me if im wrong, but this all relates to bad gaskets, and bad plug tube seals right? (hopefully nothing more major?)

So after the cost of the radiator (about 70 bucks) and the cost of both 02 sensors (CEL code remedy, cost me about $120 total for a OEM DENSO upstream, and a generic non-splice OE style Downstream) I was a little broke, my options were to either wait for OEM (Partsforyou had the kit for $62) or snag a Vel-Pro kit I found for $23.. So I went for the Vel-Pro

Anyway, long story short, I have yet to receive the Vel-Pro, and I have a return period if I change my mind. Has anyone ever used a vel-pro on an EJ222? Good? bad? am I an idiot for not spending 3x the amount on OEM?

The fact you ordered it off of eBay is concern enough. Anything engine gasket wise, you always go OEM. You would of been better off just calling Subaru and getting the parts directly from them. Use the search feature next time: https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&t...w=1440&bih=679

they're valve cover gaskets... if it was something that is difficult to get to and failure would mean catastrophic failure, I would say OEM or nothing... but if the valve cover starts leaking, you change it again... oh well, lesson learned... buy oem...

but chances are, they'll be fine.

Thanks for the input, but you may have misunderstood. I did not spend 3x the amount on this kit. What I said was "am I an idiot for NOT spending 3x the amount on OEM" because I spent 3x less on the FEL-PRO kit. $23.84 vs. $70.00+ from Subaru online (and 100+ from my local dealership)

The whole eBay thing does not bother me, many reputable retailers have eBay stores. This same kit from FEL-PR0 sells upwards of $60-$70 in other shops online. eBay is usually just a place where you can score a deal from a dude who does not have the overhead of a physical shop or warehouse. That being said, the whole eBay debate is biased IMO.

And my bad, I searched but I must have sucked at it...

Thanks

Why not just buy from a vendor on here and save money rather than buying from eBay? I am not sure where you are buying gaskets at that are costing you $100+ I got both side VC gaskets kits and 2 billet half moon seals for $60 from a vendor on here. You don't suck at it, the search engine sucks in general. I am not sure if your engine has half moon seals, but if it does, might as well replace those as well. They usually come in the kits, looks like yours doesn't. Use the fel's and if they fail, replace them and you're only out $23.

subarupartsforyou sell em in a kit for like $62 before shipping. The local dealer totaled me at like $103 buying it piece by piece (16 piece kit total for both sides)

VCG replacement seems pretty fast and easy on my 1st gen OBS, so like you said, i'll give em a shot, and if they go again, i'll go OEM of course. Thanks

A cheeky trick to get more life from the valve cover gaskets is to put washers with the cover bolts.
