Exactly! Heck, I dont think people should just come in and listen to what even I say and take is as gospel without doing a little more research to see if others agree. I could be a complete idiot.

Well I mean, I AM a complete idiot, I am just a complete idiot who happens to know a bunch about Subbies and cars in general. The rest of my life, DISASTER, but Subbies, Im fine there

I think something for newbies (such as myself) to look for is spelling. Simply put, I work tech support for Dell. If I were to tell you that your hard dryv is having problems with weendoes updebt installations, I look like an idiot because I don't have proficient knowledge in what I'm talking about. I don't know enough about it to even spell or pronounce it right.

So, don't buy a car from a guy that can't pronounce the name of the manufacturer right, don't trust people doing technical work that use the phrase do-hickey, and don't be afraid to ask questions so long as you do research and take responses with a grain of salt.

I might note that none of these names frequent the OT. We tend to be self correcting. Dave, when you come across an incorrect answer you should point it out to OT, they'd take care of it for you. NASIOCSelf Policing

Default Im a "noob"

I am probably in the wrong thread, but I am curious if anyone knows about building up a motor for a 98 subaru leg. outback?? like I said Im a noob as you call it, and I own a 98 subaru legacy outback and I want to boost my lil grocery grabber. I am curious if theres is a specific motor I should be looking at or if it's a lost cause an I should just save up an get a wrx or something. Would greatly appreciate any feedback as long as its not criticizing my question heh.

For some reason over the past 2 weeks I have seen a HUGE increase of people answering posts with just horribly incorrect info. Not all horribly info, some just wrong. Either way....

I have ended up being a bit of a dick in a few of these situations, and I apologize (a little anyway ), simply because its getting old real fast. There have always been a few responses with bad info here and there, but as of about the last 2 weeks (this week has been really bad), it has just gone out of control. Almost every thread has people just dishing out bad info as fact. If it continues on this path we are a month away from people actually believing that a BOV and CAI are a great way to make power.

Here is the thing, when someone asks a question, they need the correct answer, and in some cases, the answer they get could lead them to either fix a problem, or create a MAJOR problem with a failure.

I am not asking people to not respond at all, who the hell am I to ask that?

What I am asking is that, in the interest of keeping good, up to date info out there for all to benefit from is this.

When someone asks a question, if you do not KNOW, beyond a shadow of doubt, that you have the CORRECT answer, please dont answer, or if you arent 100% sure, then somehow indicate that your info MAY not be dead on. The wrong answer you give, may end up costing someone time/money/effort. Or it may just spread more bad info, which isnt a good thing either.

A reply that is a guess, is FINE!!! By all means do it. But for the love of god, EXPLAIN THAT ITS A GUESS!

Honestly guys, please dont take this wrong, this isnt me trying to be a dick, this is me trying to help keep good info out there for all to benefit from. There are two types of people that come into the Newbie forum.
1. Those who need an answer
2. Those who want to help.

If you are giving out bad info, you arent helping. I know we all want to help people out, and we all have something to say (lord knows we all know that about me ) but please, for the good of all, make sure you are giving out good info M'kay?

Thanks for your time, flame away. I am sure somehow this post makes me an a-hole

Current list of offenders (started 11/08/06) more to come as we see it. If you see it happening, let me know and link the post and I will add their name. Maybe if we call these people out on it, and make them known, this garbage will slow or even better stop.

First off, I've seen you get into a disagreement of semantics. That's fine. I don't think you're an *******. You might give yourself too much credit making the assumption that anyone does. You do seem to have a good amount of knowledge and I enjoy some of your posts. I kind of like seeing people with different opinions even if some of the stuff is completely false. And it's nice to see people answer a question the same way as previous posts, let's us know the info may be true. That being said, I enjoy a lot of the threads on Nasioc. And the stickies are top notch. More times than not I've had my questions answered before I even asked them just by searching around. Thanks for that! Now I'd like to share a thread schematic.

1. Person asks question.
2. Someone says check stickies.
3. Someone else makes off the wall comment.
4. Gurus and specialists hammer dumb answers.
5. Answers are repeated.
6. Unabomber pipes in with info.
7. Unabomber groupies jump on his nuts.
8. The end

I laugh everytime somebody bumps this thread .

This is not a problem specific to NASIOC. Almost all old established forums have the same thing where there is a nOOb section and then a bunch of people answering the threads there with "search nOOb" over and over because everything has already been discussed a million times. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a noob section IMO.

But if we didn't have the n00b section, n00bs would post their questions in every other forum on this site, which would suck even more. Better to keep the n00b forum. The stupid ones leave the site, the smart ones make it out... The smarter ones never even come in.

This thread isn't about noob-bashing or 'search noob'...its about people answering questions with WRONG info.

In reality, "search n00b" is more helpful than giving them bad info.

"search n00b" will not result in someone wasting money or breaking their car. Bad info could.

Ya know?

For the record, IMHO, "search n00b" posted in the newbie forum should be a no warning, instant ban offense.

j/k.

Yes they most definately should.

If I am going to tell them they should have searched, I try to always tell them the search terms that would find it, or maybe just link them to a thread or two.

And that's fine! Look I dont want this thread to make people who arent pros never post, the forum would go right down the tubes if that happened. I am just saying that if you dont have SOME sort of real experience with something, be it firsthand (preferably) or close to you (like seen it in person or something) you should maybe qualify your answer with WHY you think that, and maybe indicate that you THINK that is the right answer.

There is ABSOLUTELY no harm in trying to help. That is what makes NASIOC the greatest auto community out there, despite what some people out there on other forums may think (although I think they are being a bit thin skinned or going too much off what they heard from someone else, and that they should give this place an honest chance)
All we want to do (or try to do) is keep the best possible information out there, to help those who need it.

After all, there are plenty of people who not only dont know anything about Subbies, but have almost no automotive knowledge at all, but what to modify their cars and/or learn about them. Feeding them questionable or straight up bad info means that now we have to make them unlearn something. At best that delays their learning process, at worst, they waste money and damage their car. I have seen threads where someone bought parts with no info, and ended up replacing the motor over it. The last one I can remember was an 05 WRX with an AEM cai, full turboback and a interchiller (the Co2 intercooler sprayer), and he lost the motor. He didnt even have any gauges to tell him it was tearing itself apart.

So I mean its just a thing to try to help people out.
