Thumbs up '08 Saturn Ion... or simply a restyled Opel Astra?

Quote:
Our friends in Europe might see this as a facelifted Opel Astra with a redesigned grille, modified air intakes, and new front fascia. But the 2007 Opel Astra could adopt an alternate identity - as the 2008 Saturn Ion.

The Astra has been rumoured in recent weeks to be a stopgap replacement for today's Saturn Ion until a new model with more distinctive sheetmetal can be developed. Indeed, a new Astra is scheduled for the 2010 model year, when it might also be built in America at one of GM's assembly plants.

The rebadged Astra could go on sale as soon as next year.
Saturn also is prepping a new Vue SUV for 2008, one that shares its essentials with a new Opel compact SUV.
I am cautiously hopeful that GM doesn't wait until 2010 for the brand new Astra, and instead brings this current-gen Astra to the US in '08... even if it doesn't look quite as impressive as the renderings of the 2010 Astra, it is still better than our current Ion, and would fit the Saturn lineup lots better.

Saturn Aura = Open Vectra.
finally GM is doing some good... cept the 3.5L Honda V6 in the Vue should also go to the Chevy Eqiunox and others.

ummm no... it really shouldn't.
GM's new 3.6L V6 used in the Aura makes 252hp.
The Honda engine in the Vue is a 3.5L V6 that makes 248hp.
Both engines are DOHCs get basically the same fuel economy, have basically the same hp/liter and according to recent reviews are both very smooth.... and GM has that slick new 6-speed automatic tranny to mate it to.

I see no reason to use someone else's engine when they already have an equally good one to use now.

The Honda engine is a SOHC. Multiple variants of the same engine exists, with a couple of them at or exceeding 300HP (Acura RL and new MDX) and the lowest tuned version at 244 HP, running on regular fuel. With premium, the same engine is rumored to get at least 15 additional HP and 15lbs/ft of additional torque (so mentioned the engine design leader in an off-the-cuff remark).

If the 3.5L was a Honda DOHC with i-VTEC, then we are talking 400+HP normally aspirated.

ROFLMAO @ 400+hp !!!

Dude the NSX engine which is a 3.2 barley makes 290 hp. Which is DOHC with i-VTEC. I mean you crossed the line @ 400hp. I almost broke my leg falling out of my chair laughing.

The power output from the 3.2L in the NSX is pathetic, compared to what Honda can do today with the same displacement IF they wanted to.

the point is there will be no 400+hp NA 3.5 V6 out of a Honda anytime soon.

Maybe not 400+ but 350HP very easily....it is a Honda after all. With 300+ HP 3.5L SOHC's floating around, would it be a stretch for a high-revving Honda DOHC to generate another paltry 50HP ?

The NSX engine, which is a non-ideal 90 degree V6, does not use i-VTEC and was designed over 15 years ago. That is a far cry from the recent designs like the 2.0L NA DOHC i-vtec engine in the Civic that generates 200+ HP or the 2.0L NA DOHC VTEC (non i-VTEC) in the S2000 that generates 240HP.

The NSX engine's only priority was lightness and used the earliest version of "vtec".....of a generation that is at least 3 generations prior to the current i-VTEC. There is nothing more that could be done onto its 3.2L. It cannot be stroked or bored, since it is at its limit. The only option is to redesign the engine and hence Honda left it alone for over a decade. The new one is rumored to be WELL OVER 500HP.

Bottomline, not even Ferrari or Porsche sneezes at Honda for the sheer wizardry they exhibit in their engine designs - the ones they really focus their engineering resources to......and we are not talking about taking the easy route out by turbocharging or supercharging.

Unlikely, it's probably gonna be built at Ellesmere Port in the the UK. If it doesn't, Ellesmere Port may close and there's no way the UK govt will let that happen.

So from what it sounds like, If Saturn finds their old Ion just isn't selling - we might get an unspoiled Astra before a new more Americanized version of the Astra comes in 2010.

Now this is how you need to survive... It's good for GM to realize that they can't 'slow down' production and wait for a new wave of vehicles *cough* Ford *cough* to experiment any survival effort.

<applauds GM>
