Angry CA gets 91 Octane

Thanks to Unocal and their patents on 92 Octane, and the refusal of other gasoline companies to pay royalties to Unocal, CA will suffer and get 91 Octane gasoline. Probably at the same price it was for 92 Octane. That means Californians are getting double ripped off by paying more for 1 less octane point (I may be wrong since they might change the price later on but I doubt it since the pumps have had their octane number switched on them), and most importantly, HP lost.

Um, 91 vs. 92 octane. If you are running a full blown modded engine and you had your compresion cranked waaayy up because of the added boost then I could see some complaining. Because you would have to turn down your boost to prevent possible detonation. If you do not fit into that catagory with your car then you will never notice a difference. Especially if you have a NA engine you will be getting better milage/performance with the lower grade octane because it is more combustible.

You end up not getting the full HP at the crank even with a non fully modded engine.

As far as pricing goes, I think it is lower because price of crude oil dropped. I may be wrong I should see whether the gap between 89 and 91 is equal to 87 and 89.

The price of gas in CA is getting cheaper, but upon reading someone's else post else where, we are still getting shafted. 91 Octane is $1.59 a gallon where I live (Central CA Coast) and someone posted that 92 in TX is $1.09. Harsh.

But then again, I would pay $.50 a gallon not to live in TX. (JOKING!)

Right now I do not worry about 91-92 octane,as my RS is N/A for a couple more weeks. Currently I'm using 89-octane. But THAT will change soon, as I will be installing a EJ20T soon and will need to use the extra tane.

Guess I'll be stocking up on some octane-booster, or find a Union-76 and buy their 100 octane for what........$2.50 a gal?

The price to pay to have some HP I guess,

Cheers

EddyL.

Here in PA, we can get 94 octane at our local Sunoco. Super everywhere else is 93. One guy at our last meet said he got it for $1.13 a gallon, and that regular unleaded was $.99!
