Default Need some data on the stock wrx intercooler...

I am looking for some temperature data on the stock wrx intercooler for a project for engineering school. Would anybody know where I could find charts of intake temperature before and after the intercooler (for a stock motor) at different ambient temperatures and vehicle speeds?

Here's some background information on the project for those of you who are interested. We are designing a bolt on kit to convert the stock top mount intercooler to a water cooled intercooler. We will likely be using the stock AC condenser as the heat exchanger and of course a water pump (to be decided on).
Our plan is to set up an experimental apparatus that will allow us to measure the temperature drop across the intercooler, holding intake air flow and temperature constant (roughly simulating WOT conditions) while varying the flow rate of air through the front exchanger (simulating vehicle speed)and the flow rate of the water. Another set of experiments will be run in the same fasion but with an ice bath added to the system.

We are hoping to build a system that is capable of sufficient cooling for turbo's that support upwards of 350 hp. Right now we are trying to get a baseline on the performance of the stock timc for a completely stock motor and for a modified one with the typical mods (up and down pipes, turboback exhaust, and a reflash) at the max the stock turbo can flow.

thanks - Colin

Well I have some #'s going from 0-130 MPH pedal to metal on different temp. days stock and with water sprayer & insulation around IC. Here's some numbers on a 77*F day...Don't know how "Sientific" these are...
Old stock dry;. IC top-86*F, IC in-223*F, IC out-136*F, =59%
Old stock wet; IC top-81*F, IC in-223*F, IC out-117*F, =72%
The way I have it set up now same stock IC.
New stock dry;. IC top-82*F, IC in-226*F, IC out-117*F, =72%
New stock wet; IC top-77*F, IC in-226*F, IC out--99*F, =85%
I also have about 3 pages of #'s going around a test course I set up in normal driving from -35*C to +25*C... but that's just too much typing out for me right now, but these numbers can give you some idea of the stock IC, and how it can be improved. This is how I improved my IC ...basically it's just as good now as a front mount... that's the same size. http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b111/wrxdrvr/ There are 3 albums, wrxdrvr, ICmod, Info... check them out.

awesome, thanks man. I should call some tuning places to see if they have any solid data.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if this is for engineering school wouldn't you want to run your stock test and your own air to water tests to make sure they were done the same way, thus eliminating some of the variables?

yup. We're going to. Unfortunatly we won't be at that stage until the spring so for now we're looking for some baseline numbers to use for estimating in thermo models.
