Spy Shots: Ferrari Dino

Here is the first proof that Ferrari is working on a new 911 fighter, in the spirit of the Dino. The classic Dino was built between 1968 and 1976, and its name honored founder Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredino "Dino" Ferrari, who died in 1956 at age 24 from muscular dystrophy.

These exclusive pictures show a Dino test mule undergoing early tests. Based on an F430 body, the prototype's front fenders are a little wider and the side rocker panels are missing due to a different cooling system. It also looks like the area around gearbox and rear axle is slightly different. Another thing that identifies the test car as a mule for the Dino is the engine sound, or should we say the lack of it. It clearly doesn't sound as sharp as an F430.

While that vintage Dino had a V-6 behind the driver, the new one will be powered by a V-8 with 400 hp. A Coupe will come first, with a Spider version to arrive later. It's likely that Pininfarina will do the design work with input from former Ferrari design boss Frank Stephenson, who now heads Fiat's Centro Stile operation.

Both BMW M6 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage testers were spotted at the Ferrari facility in Maranello, so it seems like they are the main target for the Dino as well, along with the Porsche 911. Insiders expect the Dino to be priced from about $140,000, with estimated production of 4000 units annually, which would double Ferrari production.

The Dino could arrive as early as 2009. Our computer illustration shows an artist's interpretation of the new vehicle's styling direction.-Hans G. Lehmann/ Hidden Image

hmm.... But the F430 was supposedly their 911 fighter.....

I was also under the impression that they did not want to cheapen the brand by going further down market than they have already....

I guess the Veyron has stopped them in their tracks with regard to going up-market performance wise.

Hmm, very intruiging.

I'd love to see a well done Dino. It'd just be more brilliant marketing by Ferrari.

Also, they are getting pretty smart about camoflauge.

The only question I have is, will they be recreating what the Dino was? or will they recreate what Dino and Enzo originally wanted it to be.

Well it will be a lot closer in price, and it will likely be built in larger numbers than the 430 so it may be more of their 911 / AMV8 / R8 fighter. I think the 430 was supposed to be the Gallardo fighter. Anyways I thought I had read it potentially was going to be a front engined car but I guess not.
Also I suspect if it is going to be a Dino, they may use that as an excuse to get around their self imposed production limits for 'Ferrari'. I suppose this Dino could even be assembled by Maserati or Pininfarina.

A) The F430 is already powered by a 490hp V8.
B) The rocker panel ducts on the F430 are only used for rear brake cooling. The radiators are in the front behind the large air intakes. Considering any air making it's way into the rear fender is clearly just ramming into the leading edge of the rear tires, I don't see how anybody can assume anything about a different cooling system.

A Dino just seems like a shot in the foot for Ferrari right now. This looks like a revision to the F430 getting road tested. Why would they bother blending the front airdam into the fender flares on a mule?

I have to agree with this... With all I have heard Ferrari ranting and raving about how they love to keep things exclusive and expensive unlike your Porsches of the world and not wanting to venture too far down market, a Dino doesn't make sense to me really... But I could be wrong.

A dino I think would spell the end to the exclusivity that Ferrari seems to pride itself on... With a Dino, Ferrari's might become as common a sight on the road as your Porsches and the like.

Ferrari should strive to break new ground on new designs, not go the American route of living off past successes. I loved the original Dino.

They've made "cheap" Ferraris in the past (the Mondial comes to mind), and they're still an exclusive brand. Half of that has to do with the fact that it's hard to even find a Ferrari dealer to buy one at!

A tour of Miller? Heck, you don't need a tour, they are nice as anything there, anybody can go in, probably the nicest dealer I've ever been in.

They also have a great service department.
