Default Honda Europe versus anti-4x4 league

Honda Europe versus anti-4x4 league

http://motoring.reuters.co.uk/reuter...counter-attack

Quote:
Honda is writing to all CR-V owners to explain that the CR-V is no gas-guzzling anti-environment 4x4.

The letter will contain a window sticker for the car, saying, 'Not all 4x4s are the same', highlighting the fact that the Honda CR-V is greener than most 4x4's. Honda says that customers have reported getting criticised for their choice of car and want to be able to answer back.

Honda says that the CR-V's exhaust emissions are lower than some large estates, hatchbacks, MPVs and even a Mini Cooper S (although they are measuring against the outgoing model, not the new, cleaner Cooper S). Honda also says that, with a pedestrian safety score of three stars in the Euro-NCAP tests, the CR-V is in the top 10% of cars on this safety measure. John Kingston, Environment Manager at Honda (UK), said: "The 'one size fits all' approach of Anti 4x4 protesters is confusing. Some customers have expressed their concerns and frustration about being criticised for driving a CR-V."

Imagine if Honda shipped a hybrid model, would that make their heads 'splode? Hybrids .... good ... SUVs .... bad .... Knee ... cannot .... jerk.

I read once that the CAFE standards were really just a wrong approach to the whole fuel economy thing, and environmentalists should be trying to drive up gas prices, since the natural response would be for people as a whole to drive more fuel-efficient cars.

My wife's CR-V gets better mileage than my WRX, but guess which one we would get less flak for at a Green Party meeting? Guess which one holds more stuff? Guess which one is allowed on the track? But Honda does have a very valid point, the CR-V easily delivers mid-20's mpg, which puts it on par with a lot of "midsize" 4-door sedans. Even in our 2001 model we regularly hit 25 mpg in all-around driving, which is pretty similar to a lot of midsize sedans.

True, the real-time AWD can't hold a candle to the Subaru system, but it works for the situations it was designed for -- getting up slippery slopes in the winter. For that, my wife loves it.

I once saw a sticker that said "One Less SUV" ... on a VW R32.

Fuel-economy wise, it's about even with a Ford Explorer. I don't think the guy driving was really holding up the moral high ground there .... if it had been the TDI model, sure .....
