Hey all, I have this reacuring problem with my car. It runs pig rich and does not idle after I first fill it up and when the gas tank gets down to 1/4 tank. After I drive it about 1/2 mile it runs fine except for that it is rich. I tested my O2 censor and it's ok. I have replaced the PCV valve, fuel filter, and O2 censor within the past 2 months. Last night I vaccum tested my EGR valve and it would hold pressure at or above 15psi. Is that normal? I tested my EGR valve because I know that with a cold engine if you take off the vaccum hose to the EGR valve their should be some sort of change in the way it runs. Well with my car there is no change.
So after testing the EGR valve I wanted to see if it was getting any vaccum and I connected the vaccum pump to it and ran her and I had no vaccum. Now, is there supposed to be vaccum at all times or just at certain times? And I know the EGR valve solenoid is before the EGR and located under the intake manifold (a real PITA to get to). Is there any way of testing the solenoid before buying a new one for $92.45 from the dealer and taking my engine apart just to find out that it was good? Thanks, Montana ![]()

egr only gets ported vacuum, anotherwards no vacuum until you open the throttle a crack. egr usually sticks open when it screws up, and the car backfires through the intake and won't idle at all.
sounds like the fuel pump is under par, do a pressure test. low psi will cause poor atomization, leading to longer injector pulsewidth and a rich condition. |

All right. What would normal psi be so I know what to look for cause I don't know what that would be with a Subaru. Thanks

I'm trying to find a t-fitting that will fit my press. gauge and fuel line. It's hard finding a 5/16"x1/4"x5/16" fitting. Hopefully by Fri. I'll have a press. reading so if it is the fuel pump I can replace it on Sat. at my parents house. Would do it at work but when I get in at 7am the temp inside the shop is 18deg. and raises to a scorching 25deg. at about noon. I don't operate too well in the cold...like our deisel trucks

Yeah, and just did the test, 30psi, which is 6psi under the normal operating range. Looks like I'm in the market for a fuel pump.

Also, where is my fuel pump located? Napa says it's in the tank and Chilton's says it's external somewhere. Thanks again for the help and Jerry you were right on the money.

the pump is in the tank, and all subarus have a pump access hole in the trunk or under the back seat. i think that ones at the front of the trunk on the r/h side. i have some pumps, wrx ones but i think they'll work.
6 psi is low, but it depends if thats at idle or accelerating. if that's at idle tape the guage to the winshield and go do an acceleration and then take a reading. |

Ok, I'll do that tomorrow. And Squad_907 gave me a wrx pump that I'll put in there tomorrow as well. If it's not the fuel pumo I'll be calling you. Thank you again Chris for the pump.
