Default Wrx-Sti Impreza build

You will all have to excuse my utter lack of technical knowledge, but I am very interested in beginning a project car. I really would like to know what some of you guys have done in your conversions so I can have a good idea of the easiest, cheapest, and quickest way I can build an impreza that will rival others and look clean. Ideally I would like it to develop into something that at least looks close to a ver6 JDM STi and of course has some power to go with it. As this is expected to be a gradual project, Im really only interested in the most basic aspects as of now.
ex. What model should I buy (year/trim level/etc.)?
Where should I buy the parts?
How much can I expect to pay?
How long should this project take?
buy salvage?
Legacy Gt motor?
What order Should I do things in?
You get the idea.
I do realize that Im asking quite a lot and that it would probably take you all a long time to give me the information I need, but I find that patience is a virtue and I dont expect it all at once. But any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

< I have no interest in modding my current car either
If you guys wish to avoid a battle of methods you can just pm me. Thanx guys.

Ok, maybe just a link or two to where I could find out some of this info...
Ive tried researching it myself but as I said before my lack of technical knowlege renders me incapable of understanding what the heck most people are talking about. A little help please.

You have so many questions that nobody is going to have the time to answer all of them. Short story is, no matter how much you budget for a swap, you'll probably need twice the amount you thought you would when all is said and done.

If you want a V6 STi lookalike, you're going to need a 93-01 Impreza, preferably a 99-01 as you would already have most of the body parts for the "look" aspect. The motor is not going to be easy or cheap by any means, but a full crashed car would make things easier. Easier still would be a turnkey motor swap job from a place like East Coast Swappers, though LA to MA is a long drive . There are folks out by you who do them however.

Where to buy your parts is more a matter of who has them than it is choice of vendor- old skool RS parts, especially authentic overseas parts, are only getter rarer- they aren't made any more.

Ok thanx for the advice...
So lets simplify this shall we? If I am interested in building a ver6 STi lookalike, would it be cheaper to buy a wrecked 99 L and purchase the replacement parts for an RS? Or would I spend more money on the car and parts than I would have if I just started out with a true RS in decent condition?
You see, as a project car I more than anything want to use this as a test mule for future projects seeing as this will be my first. Would you advise me to start out with somthing a little more basic like a 93-94 WRX, or would it really make a whole lot of difference?

You're only going to find a 93-94 WRX overseas- we didn't get the WRX here in the USA until 2002 . The L and the RS, other than motors and trim, are the same shell. If you want to keep the same interior, the RS is a nicer interior IMHO. The bumpers and such all just bolt on either body.

If you are looking for cheap, start with a 93L, and buy the exterior bits to do the conversion. I would reccomend a full swap, including the dash. ECS did mine, but as was said, thats a far way from LA. Theres a place here in CO that does it.... that might be closer. Read through this forum, check all the "my swap is done!" ish threads. It usually gives you a basic walkthrough of what they did, and you can get an idea of what your options are.
