Default blew up my sub... suggestions for a new one?

I have (had) a jl 500watt monoblock amp powering a 12" infinity perfect sub. I liked the sub. It was extremely musical (to my ears), and plenty loud. Then I blew it up by being stupid and playing it far too loud with all the windows down on the highway.

Anyway, i liked it, and would buy another infinity, but there are MANY subs in the same price bracket ($200-250).

here's the one i had:
http://www.woofersetc.com/p2928/KAPP...subwoofers.htm

Here are a couple that I was looking at:

http://www.woofersetc.com/p7127/12&q...-Subwoofer.htm

http://www.woofersetc.com/p5203/12W3...-Subwoofer.htm

http://www.woofersetc.com/p2703/D612...-Subwoofer.htm

http://www.woofersetc.com/p2199/T851...-Subwoofer.htm

http://www.woofersetc.com/p1857/ALCH...-Subwoofer.htm

any other suggestions? ideas? thoughts? It'll be going in the same smallish sealed box the infinity is in, and as I mentioned, I'll trade loudness for musicality. It's not particularly hard to make large parts of this car rattle with any 500w 12" sub, so loudness isn't really that important.

Have you looked at any Image Dynamics IDQ's? Sounds very good to me, handles decent power, pretty good price, and gets plenty loud.

At least you can max out your amp's potential on the JL Audio w3. Other subs will be expandable if you decide to go with a more powerful amp in the future.

I plan on going with a 10" w3, but maybe I'm just a JL whore

He will not come close to maxing out that amp with a W3. It could EASILY run 2 of them without breaking a sweat. That amp births at a very solid 600+ RMS, more than enough for a very stout woofer setup.

Ahh, ok, figured the w3 was peak 500, and the same with the amp--maybe I needed to read more into the details. I'm aware that amps/speakers usually peak higher than their advertised RMS output.

Check out Fi's Woofers. I've got a 12" Fi Q, and it's amazing. I'd look at the SSD for the amount of power you have available, it's also a slightly shallower sub than the Q is.

Also check out ID subs as jay25RS mentioned, very nice woofers too.

what about an infinty basslink? They sound pretty good and it would just cut out the use of the amp since it's self powered. Then you could sell the amp and replace the money you spent on the basslink

Peak is a ficticious, nonexistent marketing gimmick. It's like a car that has 300hp being advertised as '1000hp max' . RMS power is the only number that matters. That amp COULD run 4 W3s with enough oomph to not over-stress or under-drive anything.

this is an option i'm not particularly interested in pursuing. i'm not really a big fan of integrated systems like that. I like my components separate. Besides, I can do "sounds pretty good" without much trouble. What's kind of fun is trying to get the BEST sound I can out of my limited budget and within practicality concerns.

those Fi woofers have some BIG RMS ratings for their price bracket. like nearly double the competition (1000 watts). I don't see sensitivity numbers on their website though, which is interesting. I wonder if my jl would really be enough amp for a speaker like that...

Running off a JL 500/1, I'd recommend either a JL 12W6 (very musical, very full range, good SQ) or an Alpine Type-R 12 (deeper hit, but still very musical). Kickers CVX 12 is also a good sub, although it would be (slightly) underpowered by the 500/1. I've also heard good things about Image Dynamics but I don't personally have any experience.

frontrunners right now are the Fi Q (interesting company, tons of power handling), jl12w6 (can't lose there, but honestly I've heard a million of em and wouldn't mind something different), rainbow Amboss, or something from image dynamics, but I haven't figured out which ID sub is the right one yet.

For full range its matter of opinion (I've never used them myself so I can't say). For subs, there are certainly much poorer choices out there.

For a combo unit, the basslink isn't bad at all. Its certainly much better than a Bazooka tube or whatever. But obviously, its not even in the ballpark of what the OP is interested in.

a very wide range. I want this sub to bump when I'm listening to hip hop and electronic music, but not sound boomy when i feed it something from an upright bass.

as far as the infinity side discussion, I have been pretty happy with the infinity subs I've had. they're not the loudest things in the world, but they're musical. Their full range speakers leave a bit to be desired though. they're alright for a not-too-pricey system you put in a friend's car who isn't big into car audio, but they're not quite on par with what I want out of a system.

Going to build a new box?

If so, what sizing are you willing to go to?

You say you "had" the amp. What amp do you have now?

did i say had? i meant have. The JL 500 mono is definitely the amp I plan on using. the plan is also to use the existing sealed box. it's right around .9 cubic feet.

Ok, so 1 cu.ft., 500w rms, must take a beating from time to time, and cost within $250.

What kind of sound do you want from it?

Smooth or crisp?

Laid back or in your face?

Full or delicate?

Mild or punchy?

Prefer emphasis anywhere? Low bass fullness or midbass detail?

Fun sounding or analytical?

What kind of characteristics do you want?
