Default Who Tunes Hydra in FL?

Hello,

We are getting ready to install the following on my 05 STi sometime tomorrow:

Hydra EMS
Hydramist Meth Injection
PE 850cc Injectors
Perrin Fuel Rails
Walboro 255 Fuel Pump
Perrin FMIC
Tial 44mm Wastegate
Greddy Type R BOV
GT35R (.82) Turbo
GTSpec Exhaust Manifold
Greddy Profec B Electronic Boost Controller

The block will be stock

Clutch will go in within a week or two after tune

The rest will be under body braces and suspension related.

Now, I don't know where in Florida I can get the car tuned reliably for this setup. I have heard many great things about Doug over at TopSpeed but that is about 420 miles away from me.

I am looking for some suggestions, should I drive my car up to Georgia (untuned) for Doug to tune or is there a reputable tuner in FL that can work with Hydra's that is not 7 hours away like Doug is?

If I can drive the car like this for that many miles, how can I do so without going into boost? Is it safe to set the wastegate for just 8psi via the boost controller so that I can drive the car up there with the stock ECU connected at least and connect the Hydra up in Georgia?

I need some suggestions. Thanks

You can try jblaine. He's too humble to call himself a tuner, but he might help you get started.

Wow, that's quite an ambitious list for tomorrow

I am unaware of any "professional" tuners in FL with experience tuning Hydra units. Phil showed the ins and outs of the Hydra to the head tuner at Central Florida Turbo ("Rolo") when he was down for a Hydra tuning day. CFT is in Orlando, but I really cannot recommend them in good confidence. They have many very fast cars, but they're not my kind of guys (professionally, level of detail, care... etc). Phil, in contrast, is.

You have the WB02 add-on?

You have a ~850cc STI base map from Phil @ Element Tuning?

I wouldn't do anything with the stock ECU after those mods.

If you want to drive without the ability to make boost, you have few options.

1. Set the Soft RPM Limit to 3500RPM (max).
2. Give yourself a big purposeful leak between the turbo outlet and throttlebody. This should be relatively easy with the BOV.

If (and only if) you have an 05 STI base map from Phil already, you are welcome to book a hotel in St. Petersburg and we'll go out at midnight and I can very likely get you a rough (but safe) tune up to 15psi or so. That's as far as I'll take it. I've tuned my own Hydra for the last 12 months, but obviously I will not be held responsible for your car, engine, or safety.

jblaine,

I am in Orlando. I am interested in scheduling something with you to get a base tune like you mentioned. I have to call Phil today to get a stat on my hydra (as far as delivery)

My girlfriend lives in St. Pete so I can crash there ;-)

Please give me a call at 321-226-0193

Tito

PS thanks for the help guys!!!

Better yet, I'll PM you my number. I can do this any night with 1 day's notice (no wife, no kids) but, I want to be really up-front and clear here at the risk of sounding dick-ish:

- I'm not gonna wrench on your ride to fix anything in order to get things tuneable. If the car is not finished and buttoned up (aside from the tune), you are welcome to use my tools, but it will likely be a wasted night.

- I know absolutely nothing about the Greddy Profec B. I suggest you bring the manual if you're not savvy.

- You'll respect my life while driving while I am tuning

- I will try my best and if everything falls into place as it should, it should be a pretty easy night, but I don't want to hear any flack if we're not able to get you a rough 15psi tune

Congrats to jblaine for being availble for help, I don't think any of that sounds dick-ish at all.

I don't have a problem with any of these. I love my life very much to not respect either while driving so don't worry about that. The car will be complete between tonight and tomorrow. I just have to wait for the Hydra to come in..should be here by this week or begining of next.

I'll be there just for the tune and no wrenching.

I'll bring the manual for the boost controller.

Thanks a million for the help. I will contact you tonight. I have to give Phil a call

I'll be there in January if you are still looking to tune. I've tuned dozens of hydras and of course my own. I tune with open source stuff and UTEC as well. We'll call me "semi-professional" since I'm not giving up my day job yet, but I tune 1-3 cars per week. Might be there in Dec. we'll see. Sister is in Stuart, FL.

I hope this continues because then I'll never have to leave DC

I have also heard good things from a couple customers about Brandon at PSI Racing in Miami.

Just do your homework and look for happy customers who have been tuned with the Hydra. It doesn't matter what shop X says, it always boils down to happy customers for product X.

As JBlaine mentioned as long as you are starting with an Element base map and your tuner knows the Hydra well then they should have a fairly easy time dialing in the fuel curve and making various adjustments where they are needed. Just go with someone who really knows the Hydra well and you can't go wrong. No matter how good the tuner is they can never tune out "broken." Bring your tuner a car that is put together properly with the kinks worked out.

Thanks,
Phil

LoL dude i have almost the same exact set-up as your car, I`am tuned on 91 and c16. If you need a nice map to run the car and get started, I have a decent one, I still need a 93 retune so i can make more power with our wonderful 93 octane and elevation

I should have my car back up and ready in the next month or so, praying for January If someone is able to I`d love to learn the ins and out of tuning the hydra, ya know the basics. seeing i cant pay someone to tune my car forever haha.

OR how about, a Dyno day for phil from element tuning to come down here and tune some hydras!

Guys I would be happy to tune you when I have time. One of the Orlando shops called me trying to get me down there but I'm not even in the country right now so I couldn't accommodate but January should be a good time for me if you are interested. Any excuse to get out of our freezing cold weather. LOL

Thanks,
Phil

Nice Phil! It would REALLY REALLY be great if you could come down here, I was wondering by chance if you would have the the newest version of the hydra if you did decide to come down here for January,

To the other guys we should all talk a little bit about making this happen, if we all divide the price it wont be so expensive, and we`ll all get the best tunes from the best hydra tuner.

As for me I have 2 tunes I would Need, Pump 93 tune with 50/50 meth/h20 and C16 race gas tune. so I would imagine i would need 2.5-3.5 hours of tuning

I will come as long as there is 8 hours worth of work. Keep in mind that most Hydra tunes take 2-3 hours for pump gas and +1 hours for race gas or water injection so I can really only squeeze in 3 cars a day as there are always car issues and you have to factor in setup and breakdown of the dyno. I used to allow four but someone usually got the short end of the stick so I rarely allow that anymore.

Thanks,
Phil
