For starters, I searched. There isn't much out there about this specific issue.
Apparently the seam on my gas tank has rusted to the point where gas will spray out if it's filled passed the halfway mark.
Shop confirmed it's basically hosed and will have to be replaced. However there is another thing going on and I'm looking for verification as it will help my decision.
The shop claimed the four rear trailing arms have to come off to remove the tank, they told me they are seized, and cannot be removed by traditional means. They'll have to be destroyed to get them off, and subsequently be replaced. This would tack an additional 1000+ to the cost to replace the tank.
Long story short, I have the car back now. I'm driving as is and keeping the tank below half full. I'm trying to decide if I can get this repair done for less, and if its even worth it at this point. car has 205k on it.
I did some searching on the diagrams, and I don't see 4 trailing arms. I see two, one per side.
Here's a diagram (I do't know why it says legacy, thats the pic that shows up while searching for 2002 WRX parts :
Item 6, there's two (per side) of them. Lateral Link.
Item 2, there's one (per side) of them. Trailing arm. According to the parts site.
I'm wondering if the shop gave me the wrong part name, I just know he said I'd need four of them.
yeah, the easy answer is take it somewhere else for an estimate, but I've already spent 250 bucks from the last fiasco and was out of a car for two weeks (long ****ing story in itself). I'm trying to see if I can at least get the parts cheaper, start with that, then make a decision.
Anyone have any type of experience with this? What would your suggestions be?
