Post Toyota Highlander Turbo Hybrid @ SEMA 2006

Toyota exhibited a turbo hybrid Highlander at SEMA. The engine is turbocharged, but the interesting thing is that the base car is a hybrid. Normal output is 268hp, while the K24 turbo bumps output up to 305hp. Its likely that the output is a conservative figure in order to stress the importance of fuel consumption expected by a hybrid. The vehicle is being marketed as "the ulimate SUV".

Funny - I'd think that the "ultimate SUV" would at least have a small amount of off-road ability instead of being a jacked-up Camry.

For an "ultimate SUV", give me a Toureg V10 TDI. Or make a 4-Runner diesel-hybrid...

that's a big TMIC. but doesn't this defeat the purpose of it being a hybrid?

Something tells me that is gets worse mileage than the gas model and offers a lot less performance (even due to weight alone) if one were to add FI to the petrol version

call me crazy but i think the highlander resembles the forrester. if you look at just the basic lines and fender buldges... they share a lot. but of course the forrester came out before the highlander

Love the thinking behind this vehicle - but too bad it is uglier than sin.

BTW what ever happened with that electric motor-assisted turbo? (was supposed to pre-spool the turbo to essentially eliminate turbo lag).
