Default Altiris Agent? - Big Brother is watching meeeeee!

IT guys - WTH is this?

My understanding is that it monitors the software on my PC. I just don't know what it's looking for, and what that entails?

the altiris agent can do a lot. it most likely is doing inventory and application/patch deployment.

a work pc is entirely the property of your employer and you use it at their discretion. so they have the right to inventory, audit, report and yes even remote control / remote view you.

it's very doubtful they would need or want to do that unless it was the helpdesk having a problem, but it's still possible.

If you have admin rights, you can kill the various Altiris processes. Of course, that's gonna be rather obvious to IT...

I used to be an Altiris administrator. Its mostly used for software deployment, imaging and inventory management. (just like colin said)

Usually there is a lowercase "a" in the system tray, they are only monitoring what you are doing when it starts flashing with an eye in the middle.

right.. but the recent releases have an option where you can run it as a system process. it can't be killed.

this is a really bad thing when it starts freaking out on a server and chewing up cpu, we found.

That is what mine does every once and a while, takes 98% of resources and I can't do anything.

I know an employer can monitor what you do on your computer at work, but what if you use your work laptop at home on your personal network. Other than access to history and cache, can they montior what you use your work laptop for at home? No Pron or anything, just curious. (I've had to fire others for looking at porn at work, and would never risk it myself.)

Yeah. I saw your location and figured out you were one also. There are a bunch of us on here, although our (NJ) location is far away from you Mid-A guys.

Suppose somebody had software (legally purchased) brought from home on their machine, and used for work purposes... say, for creating .pdf files. Will the Altiris thing freak?

The Altiris client won't do anything other than report back to the mothership that your own software is present on your work PC. But since doing what you're doing is probably against the software publisher's EULA, you'll probably be directed to remove it. Just guessing, tho'.
