Default Az Registation

I'm new to Tucson. I recently renewed my registration in Utah and do not wish to renew my registration until that one expires. The problem is my Utah Drivers license is also due to expire.

Is AZ registration required to get an AZ drivers licence?

What will happen if I get pulled over without AZ plates and an AZ drivers license?

I got a ticket for having a CA drivers license but an Arizona registration...so that particular combination can get you in trouble, at least, haha.

I would just call the AZ MVD or ADOT and ask if it can be transferred to AZ. Or maybe you would get a refund from Utah when you do the AZ registration...?

You're legally hosed. AZ law requires that you register your car as soon as you 'establish residency.' Utah does not offer refunds on unused portions of your registration.

Good news is that when you move out of here, Arizona will (at least under current law) refund the unused portion of your registration less some processing fee.

Also - you should be able to get an AZ drivers license regardless of your plates. You don't need to own a car to get a license. But if pulled over, you could be cited for not having AZ plates.

Couldn't you just renew your license in UT? Shouldn't...but could work out better

Az is crazy expensive to register cars.

Keep the Utah license (renew by mail maybe?) and plates and say you don't live in AZ

Or get an AZ license and don't get pulled over! The locals do enjoy keeping out of state plates honest, though.

Good luck!

Similar situation coming from Oregon. My wife's car had a 5 year registration that we were only through about 1.5 years on. Lost out on that. We were able to get our AZ licenses without registering our cars here though. Unfortunately, you are supposed to register here asap. We let it ride for about 6 months until we wanted to refi at a local bank. They require an AZ registration.

No, you just need to provide proof you live in AZ to get your license.

The cop is going to wonder why you're an AZ resident by virtue of your license while you have a car registered in Utah. He'll then write you a ticket for not having an AZ registration.

The only way you can pull this off is to get another Utah license and keep your Utah plates. That way, you're officially remaining a resident of the state of Utah. Plenty of the snowbirds do this.

I'm from Salt Lake, too. Good to see Beehive folk here. One of mines will expire next March but the other will on August. I need to register her here and I will get AZ driver's licence. The one expires on Aug is Legacy GT in Stage 3 with full turbo back. I'm more worrying about the emission rather than registration.
Any advice for Stage 2 Suby?
Thanks.

Make sure you have no check engine lights on, and that your gas cap seals well...then go pass.

Also stage 3 sounds like srs bizness

Arizona registration is a money-making scheme, that you'll notice doesn't go to fixing the roads. (If you're in Tucson, Grant Road is one example. Kolb south of Golf Links is another.) Look at how many license plate styles are available in this state, all to make money.

If you're outside the two main metro areas, and can prove you don't daily drive your car into them, you can get emissions exempt. I registered a car in Kingman for this reason years ago.

The emissions test here is a computer check and gas cap sealing check for recent cars. Older cars go over the rollers.

Oh yeah... this is my first post. I've had my STI three weeks.

Back again with a new conundrum.

I'm looking at purchasing a motorcycle in AZ. The problem is I still don't want an AZ drivers licence.

I have a Utah Licence, Utah Registration, Utah insurance on my car.

If I purchase a bike in AZ, with AZ registration, are they going to make me get an AZ license?
