Default Questions on CATs

Hey,

I'm thinkign about replacing my CATs with high flow ones... i drive a NA 1999 2.5 RS... Gino, from Red Star Racing out here in the SF Bay Area, said it kinda sounds like i got a clogged up cat... and i proabably do, cause my exhuast smells a little funny.

What are my options? I have two CATs right?

Your car has one cat, between the headers and midpipe. A high-flow cat can bump you 5-7 WHP. Call Cobbtuning (www.cobbtuning.com) and see if they have on in stock.

Default Do the 99s only have one cat??

The MYOO has two tween the header and midpipe.I just replaced mine with the Random Tech single high flow cat from Cobb. There is a noticable increase in performance.Expect a check engine lite though.

Check the private classifieds for thread on the new Brullen headers with hi-flow cats (about $750 US).

this is the Random Tech cat. So far for the MY99 i have had no CEL so all is well and the power is there also. worth it IMHO.

You running headers? Low emission system efficiency/catalyst efficiency CEL?
If so, WRAP THEM.
Wrapping the headers will keep more heat in the exhaust and heat up the cat to it's operating temp (600-700F). A properly operating cat will prevent that CEL from appearing. Took two months of an intermittent CEL before I figured that out. Now I'm running great (cooler engine compartment too), sounding awesome (lot less noise in the cabin and the exhaust sounds sweet!!) with NO CEL. wwwooooooohhhhhhhhhooooooooo!!!

I'm really pumped. This was a thorn in my side for a long time

Dominic,,nope no headers yet, just the cat, stromung mid and tail.
Thanks fr the heads up though, when i get the headers ill wrap em fr sure.It kinda lets ya know the cat alone is freein up the exhaust when ya get a CEL,yep ive checked the code its the cat.

hmph, my Borlas are wrapped and i'm still getting CELs since i've installed my Random cat.

i'm always the exception though, since wrapping seems to be the solution for almost everyone else.

the wrap really does make a difference in feel and in the exhaust tone, so i don't regret spending the time.

Im planning on getting headers and a cat soon. what do you use to wrap the header? also, has anyone been emissions tested since installing said items?

thanks,

i (and others) have used this stuff called ThermoTec to wrap the headers, some have opted to coat the wrap with hi-temp sealer, others haven't. check it out at http://www.thermotec.com . i got mine at a local hot rod shop, you'll need to search around for it or otherwise order it from the website.

others have had their headers ceramic coated, i know nothing of this, do a search on the board for more info. it's a more expensive option, but i imagine that it looks a lot nicer than a mummified header.

the Random cat is supposedly CARB legal (that's what the paperwork that comes with it says), so emissions should not be an issue for anyone running it, unless your state has a visual inspection or they plug into the car's ECU while you're tossing CELs instead of using a tailpipe probe.

Make your own! Summitracing.com 2.25" catco cat, $60, two 02 sensor bungs, $12, a few feet of stainless pipe, and have the local muffler shop bend and weld. probalby cost you $150 or less. I don't think you can buy one premaid for that. (but I could be wrong. If I am, please tell me, I love to save money!)
