Default 06 WRX turbo upgrade question

Ive been going back and fourth on the idea of replacing my stock VF30 turbo with something bigger. But the whole issue is im not to sure of what to replace it with.

I have had some friend make some suggestions, but i dont belive they are entirely accurate, seeing as they both owned 04's with the 2.0L engines. From what i can tell right now the turbo is choking my engine pretty bad.... but also doesnt the VF39 choke out the STI a little bit? any insight?

what a stock vf30? The wrx comes stock with the td04 from 02-06, the sti comes with the vf39..I dont know how you got a vf30 stock maybe you just misread somewhere..anyways yes the td04 is too small for the 2.5 block it jst doesnt get it done...i would recommend a vf39 or larger if you want to get rid of the choke....

The 06 is a td04 not a vf 30 like previouly mentioned. If you are serious hit up the classfieds or something looking for people with used trubos for sale maybe. I am pretty sure if you get a new turbo you ahve to upgrade the TMIC and perhaps the injectors and such. Search around more, you will find your answers.

you dont have a stock VF30.

You have the same tiny ass TD04 that the 02-05 wrx has. And the STis VF39 is pretty much identical to a VF30 when it comes to power and spool anyway, so even if you DID have a stock VF30 (you dont, it never came stock on a WRX, anywhere) you would gain nothing by going to a 39.

imo, the thing is to have a target hp goal. call/write deadbolt, forced performance, someone with REAL knowledge. know your set-up, that plus your goal will get an answer.

btw, (if you care to go this far), understanding the limitations of your internals (crank, piston rods, pistons) will help you pick a do-able target...

Which turbo to use really depends on your goals. If you are ust looking for a slight upgrade at low cost a VF30,39, or 22 would be nice.

There are quite a few other nice upgrades based on Mitsubishi center sections, which have the nice benefit of being rebuildable (the VF series are not rebuildable). Depending on your goals, there are LOTS of different options based on this framework.
