It will be fine but it will be heat soak city. Highly recommend that you get a bigger tmic. Most quality tmic, although bigger than stock, have a lower pressure drop too which is a plus.

Several people here have run 20g's and stock STi TMIC's, a good thermal coating or blanket (or both) takes care of most of the heat soak issue; and they can handle the volume of air. An upgraded TMIC would be better of course; but its perfectly doable on the Stock TMIC. Your friend is pretty much right. Larger than a 20g tho...not so much.

It will be fine, I ran my 20g on the stock TMIC for a while.(04 sti)
I had no heat shield or any thing like that and heat soak really wasn't an issue.

There are guys here doing it, but you just need to know the issues. Repeated, back-to-back pulls at high boost will heatsoak the stock TMIC - that happens even with the stock snail; otoh, if a guy only jumps on it every so often and not all the time, it should work just fine. The other issue is stationary heatsoak; regardless of how big the TMIC is, or how well you wrap all the obvious parts, a TMIC will heatsoak if the car is parked hot and left for any length of time. The engine compartment with zero air flow becomes a frigging oven (you cannot wrap the block), and there's nothing you can do about it besides moving the tmic off the top of the engine...but then we're talking about a FMIC. However, once you get moving again the TMIC will cool back down pretty quickly.

The tmic will work fine. I am contemplating this setup. A heatshield turbo blanket and some wrap should do the trick. Heat soak is what everyone says, but stock sti's get heat soak from just stock powers. Heat soak is inevitable, but it's not like it's that bad for your car.

lol don't u hate when people jus post the word "wrong info" and dont bother explaining.
but anyways there are 2 local members who are both running 20G turbos with the sti tmic (06sti, 07wrx) and they havent had any heatsoak issues as of yet.
maybe u try to get a JDM TMIC ?

in my experience you can use a TMIC (even upgraded) for daily driving and 1/4 mile racing. But if you are planning on auto-x or road racing with pump gas I would NOT recommend running a TMIC of any kind.

^fail. The STi tmic will be more effective than any X-brand Ebay tmic.

A bigger tmic does not always mean better performance. Construction also plays a big part of this. Bigger is not always better.

I ran the stock STi tmic with the SZ49 at 421whp/414ft-lb for a year without alky and without issues.

Couldn't tell you. I don't have that problem here.
There isn't any place within 2 hours of me that would produce that amount of traffic either.

Is this a real question? If so, the answer is it will be the same temp as everything else under the hood - friggin hot.

20G Should work fine. Although you won't get the most out of it, it does work. Because the STi TMIC has been proven to work on a FP Green which is bigger. DON'T GO BUYING AN EBAY TMIC NOW.

Don't buy ebay anything. If you want to buy a big tmic I suggest turbo xs. You can get them used for 400 bucks maybe and a new one for around 600.

I agree with k04sti. I'd highly reccommend TurboXS or Spearco TMICs. P&L Motorsports uses these with their GT35R setups over a TMIC simply because of their great cooling/flow without having to compromise the extra lag that comes with using a FMIC. Unibomber's manifesto has an 2 intercooler sections (FMIC and TMIC) that shows the flow rates of different intercoolers, as well as the cooling rates. That should help give you an idea on what the differences are between your STI TMIC and a higher end TMIC.
