I just put the emblem back in the chrome ring to take a pic and see how it would look.... Going to paint the chrome ring matte black in a minute. I'll get pics up asap.
Will be using Matte Black wheel paint for the chrome ring after I prime it with Valspar plastic primer!

Looks like it came from the factory

So you guys seem to be the experts on this... Bought my car like this.

Is this normal?
I'm going to paint it eventually, so nbd, but if this is something that naturally happens, I am definitely doing whatever it takes to get that chrome out of both front and back.

Almost looks like someone tried to get the chrome off but gave up.

I wondered that, but the background is still clean... Could you get to the chrome without damaging the background?

Well on mine (05 Sti), the chrome is just an indentation when you are looking at the back of the badge after taking it apart. So on mine that could definitely happen if someone started scraping off the chrome.

^ agree. Mine is 2011. You could scrape only the chrome portion, although it too is coated on the backside with blue paint that you would never see until taking it off. We are assuming your car was bought used? It seems odd though that they would just scrape part of the emblem and then put it back on without actually changing any colors. To reach into that indentation it would need to be off the car.

To more specifically answer the question... that does not seem normal at all and I don't think it would ever naturally happen after seeing how difficult it is to get through the coating on the back. The blue checked pattern is quite thick and I don't see how any normal weathering would affect it. Since it is also covering the chrome on the back I would say this injury is inconceivable without someone pulling off the emblem with an ice pick.

I did notice a few scratches here and there on the chrome part of my badge when I was repainting it, though I bought my sti very used, so it may just be wear and tear...somehow.

I bought the car with only 20k miles, and the guy had not touched a thing in his car, and he was a big goober. I doubted he would try to change it, so I was just curious. I have a few other projects to finish up, and then it will be a repaint. I think I'll do white stars, and a further designated background color...

Did mine a couple weeks ago. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome. However, it was a total PITA to do.

I have an '07 and the chrome is "flaking" off both the front and rear badges. I know a couple other folks experiencing the same issue. It's really strange seeing as how it does this with the emblem is all sealed up.

I guess it's incentive to pull it off and repaint it!

I was thinking that maybe when the emblem heats up a lot on a hot day the chrome paint may not hold up so well and begin deteriorating?

My logo has the same marking with the logo on my 06 and I only noticed it about a year ago. Not sure what could of caused the chrome to look like that...going to either paint or get a custom sticker made for it

Just going to warn you. When I did mine with goof off it was an absolute PITA and took me the better part of an hour just to get the paint off.

I'm curious to see how it would look if you remove the chrome and go with matte black stars/boarder and glossy background... Anyone done this?

The badge is from the trunk of my '11 Sti. I posted these badge removal instructions in another thread to help another member, maybe they will help you aswell....

1. Heat up thoroughly with either heat gun or hair dryer. I used heat gun.
2. Take fishing line and cut through all the adhesive you can get to from behind the badge using a saw-type cutting motion.
3. Take an old credit card and slide it behind the badge using the corner of the card to cut more and more adhesive. Eventually you will be able cut through to the bottom of the badge from top center. The card is slim enough to fit between the pins you speak of.
4. Lastly I removed the adhesive left behind with "goof off". I do not recommend this though. Try at your own risk. It didn't harm my paint but just because it didn't doesn't mean it won't harm yours.
5. Done deal, move on to next mod.

I was going to remove the chrome stars but after hearing How much work it is to get the paint off, i decided it wasn't worth the time right now considering how much work i already have on my plate at the moment. Also what some people don't know is that when you remove the chrome you get rid of the "3D" look that the chrome has originally since it's reflective. I'm not really a fan of that personally. I'm going to be ordering a new chrome ring, i don't like the look of matte black and gloss black with the ugly chrome stars that don't blend.

I thin layer of silicone, or some of the 3M gray tape the manufacturer uses to put trim pieces on.
