Question Noise problem after Silencer Removal

I just got the silencer removed on my 95 1.8 L saturday, and ive noticed that its making a very loud "wind" sound when going upwards of 75mph. It almost sounds like theres a big arse hole in the car over there...

And no, its not the cool intake acceleation sound I can hear it when I let off the gas, or when im just cruising along.

Ideas?

Could be the wind rushing over something in the fender and making the noise. Like blowing over the top of a beer bottle

Its definatly there for the growl, which I love.

This is totally different than what the silencer is protecting from, like the fender is loose... I need someone with a simular experience to post on this :monkey:

isn't it a giant tankish thing in the fender well? i would assume removing that would allow air to freely fly into the front quarter panel part and whip around and maybe rattle it a bit. but ive never actually seen the silencer thing so im basically talking out of my ass (which i will gladly admit)

What you are hearing is a standing wave harmonic noise. If you look at the part between the MAF second big torque box that pipe has a goofy looking part hanging off of it. It's used to brake up the sound wave and prevent that moaning noise. It was tuned with the silencer in place. Now that the silencer is gone you've de-tuned it and you get the noise. It's no biggie just annoying. It happens to other cars too. My Contour did the same thing we called it the "Moose" noise. My wife's Legacy Outback makes the noise at idle now that I removed the silencer. The pitch will actually change depending on the density (humidity) of the air. I eliminated the noise in my RS by removing the connection between the MAF and torque box and replacing it with a smooth mandrel bent pipe as seen here:

Here is what the silencer (aka snorkus) looks like:

Hope this helps.

My silencer is totally different BTW. And im not talking about a "moaning" noise, its a loud, obtrusive wind sound like my window is open but its in the front/right of the car.

The good thing is that now with my silencer out, I can go above 3500rpms without the car sounding like its going to explode

I know of what you speak of my friend....it makes cruising on the highway unbearable....I think it has something to do with the throttle body, because it only happens with midpressure on the accelerator.....if you puch it it doesn't do it that bad, and if you barely gas it it does it....I was thinking of woking on my TB and seeing if that remedies the problem, let me know if you find anything.

Um, no... I take my foot off the gas, or put the car in neutral, or put the clutch down, and it still does it at around 75mph. Loud, wind noise from the front-right fender area... I need to know EXACTLY what it is to fix it

An interesting thing is in that picture up there, where it shows the plug-fender spot, I dont have a hole in the first place

Anyone with any experience with my model car have any knowledge on this?

Just curious, are you still using the stock paper filter or have you upgraded to a K&N or Amsoil filter?

I had a bit of humming when I first did the snorkusectomy and silenver removal, but that went away after I stuck in the amsoil filter. I haven't had any noise problems at highway speeds. Of course, the outback is about as aerodynamic as a brick ****house so I probably have much more windnoise than you do to begin with. Could just be I don't notice it.

I got a K+N actually. And this aint no stinkin humming!

Ill say it again... It sounds like my window is open while on the freeway, but its in the front/right of the car.

Its not a hum, moose sound, or a intake swallow... Its a very loud wind noise!

Maybe you shouldn't drive so fast if it only makes that sound at 75+ miles per hour. Your speed limit must be higher than ours I guess...

someone had to say it. And I wish we were allowed to drive faster but thre are WAY too many bad drivers for it too be safe. I can accept this and just wish that there were more cheap places to race and that every town had a quarter mile track and other fun racing places for everyone to go to and drive, not watch...

Kostamojen,

My car makes that same sound too. It's some kind of wind noise. Like having the window open or something.

I recently swapped intakes with a friend, I'm now using the stock torque box with an aftermarket K&N cone filter. I'll take some pictures tomorrow. Mine's not an incredibly loud sound. I can overpower it easily by turning up the stereo. It almost sounds like it's coming from under the dash. It's coming from very far back in the engine bay I think.

At first I thought it was because I removed the plate that blocked my hood vent. Now after reading your post, I'm beginning to think it might be something else.

scotty: Hmm... Im sure my noise is coming from the fender area. I think something is loose, like that flap in the fender well, or maybe the bottom plastic piece... I dont know. I'm trying very very hard to find out exactly what it is though...

janik: I drive 75 on the freeway all the time, and I dont pass anyone. And If I was in the fast lane, I have to do 80 to keep up.
I dont race anyone, I dont get pulled over ever (once in 6 years of constant driving), and I have never been in a traffic accident that was even remotely my fault.
Obviously, im doing something right, and nothing wrong.
But this noise is bugging me

I have a warm fuzzy feeling that I might be able to help. My old car was a 91 MR2 without the driving lights. I removed the little black plastic block off bits to try and get some brake cooling (or see what happened). At about 100mph the air was blowing into my fender hard enough to push the plastic fender liner up against the tire. The tire rubbed/melted holes in the liner. Loud noises at high speeds are bad, m'kay.

Anyway, what I think might be happening is air is blowing your fender liner like a reed instrument. Test by blocking the airflow into your fender (duct tape?). You could also remove a few bolts from the liner to loosen it up. You could also drill some holes in the plastic.

Thats possible... I have a loose thingy there, but it was loose before and not causing any problems... But the silencer being gone could mean more air in that area thus pushing it back... Maybe I can put a screw+nut in there to hold it together?

Well, maybe my situation is different, but here's what I think: I think that my noise is caused by air rushing from the back of the hood over the passenger side window wiper.

This is just an educated guess, and I'm not quite sure how I'm gonna go about fixing it. Maybe I'll remove the wiper for a couple days and see if the noise goes away.

Hmm, thats possible, but I dont have those holes down there on the side, and the 1 hole I do have is covered by the airbox... (slight gap, but its not enough to have that much air go up there I dont think)

Anyone want to volenteer to stick their head out my passanger window at 75mph to see if they can locate it?
