Default 2009 Chevrolet Impala to go RWD (share platform w/ Camaro)

2009 Chevrolet Impala to go RWD (share platform w/ Camaro)

Moving Up?
Impala goes back to rwd in '09

DETROIT -- Chevrolet's Impala is going rear-wheel drive in 2009.

General Motors sources say the next Impala will share a rwd platform with the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro, which will be built late in 2008 in Oshawa, Ontario. Impala production will start several months later, a GM source said.

The rwd Impala also will be distinguished from the 2007 model by its long wheelbase and short front and rear overhangs. The car will be similar in length and width to the front-drive 2007 Impala. The passenger compartment will be larger than that of the 2007 Impala, the source said.

The rwd platform is being engineered by GM's Holden subsidiary in Australia.

GM has yet to decide whether to maintain the Impala as a mass-market sedan or move it upmarket. An upscale Impala would enable GM to avoid a market overlap with the restyled and re-engineered 2008 Chevrolet Malibu.

The 2008 Malibu will debut at the Detroit auto show in January. While the Malibu's sheet metal is unique, the car is similar to the Saturn Aura in shape and size.

The front-wheel-drive Malibu could steal sales from the Impala, GM insiders admit. And some buyers may prefer a front-drive Chevrolet sedan.

The 2008 model will be larger than the current Malibu and will have a more luxurious interior.

So will the Impala go upscale?

"It is too early to tell," the GM source said. "With Malibu's introduction next year and market analysis and trends and things like that, I think anything I said about that would be speculative."

I always thought it was funny that they sold a FWD V8 Impala.

Well atleast now it will be easier to market the FWD (and smaller) Malibu and the RWD (and larger) Impala. This should help distinquish semi-similiar products in the future.

I don't think that they should try moving the Impala "upmarket" though - leave that for the eventual Buick built on the same platform.... keep Chevy in the low/mid-level market.

Good points. They need a few options.
Economy FWD
Economy RWD
Performance RWD

Allows them to market 3 different cars, too entirely different markets.

Well then, they'll finally have at least one thing in common with the Chevy NASCAR.

So should we be expecting an Impala SS to be very similar to the next-gen Munaro/GTO?

Even so, a nicely tuned LS2 on a DECENT chasis (meaning, the SS badge isnt referring to a boat name, as in the S.S. BodyRoll) with cylinder management for the highway would make for an interesting car....poor man's 5 series maybe?

ok, maybe I am jumping the gun a bit...lol

It will likely be something other than the LS2. Whatever they're going to call the 6.2L V8 when it starts showing up in cars.

There are some reports that the next Pontiac G6 will be rwd for 2010. It will be built on a Epsilon II platform. Supposedly the G5 coupe may also make the switch.

If the next G6 is RWD, then it will have to grow in size by quite a bit to fit on the Camaro/Impala/some-unnamed-Buick platform.... it would be more in the size range of the Bonneville or GrandPrix (or whatever the new naming scheme is). My guess is that Pontiac gets a RWD car, but it will probably be called something other than G6.

rumors are its to be called "G8" and potentially called the Grand Prix. Last rumor I heard also stated it would be based directly off the new Holden Commodore model but w/GP fascias, etc...

Also said, it would potentially be a MY08 model too, but believe it when you see it...

A well designed, well built, 4-door with a nice small block V8 and a six-speed manual might be something that could pry me out of my subie.

It's called the L76 and it is already in monaros in aus. It is a Escalade L92 6.2with a different cam and L76 intake manifold. The heads are the beauty of this engine as it flow 330cfm out of the box and has similar runner designs and valve centerlines as the LS7 heads.

GMs current lineup of Gen IV small blocks are pretty impressive.
