Default Mazda Nagare Concept @ 2006 LA Auto Show

Mazda Nagare Concept @ 2006 LA Auto Show

Press Release:
Quote:
MAZDA TO REVEAL ALL-NEW DESIGN CONCEPT
AT 2007 LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Mazda Motor Corporation will present an all-new concept car, the Mazda Nagare for the first time globally at the Greater Los Angeles International Auto Show during its press conference at 16:05 local time on 29 November 2006.

Following on the heels of three very successful and exploratory Mazda design concepts – Sassou, Senku, and Kabura – from last year’s show season, Nagare is the first indication of Mazda’s future design direction.

According to Laurens van den Acker, newly-appointed General Manager of Mazda’s Design Division, Nagare sums up the future of Mazda design in one deceptively simple word: Flow.

“Nagare is a celebration of proportions and surface language that will evolve into subsequent designs planned for presentation at future international auto shows. Nagare examines light and shadow, and begins to reveal the global design cues for the next generation of Mazda vehicles.”

Franz Von Holzhausen, Director of Design for Mazda North American Operations, who headed the Nagare design team in Irvine, California describes the concept as an evolving expression of Zoom-Zoom:

“Inspired by the movement of nature’s elements, our designers have captured motion, energy and lightness, translating into a beautiful language of lines and forms that are powerful yet effortless, provocative yet strikingly seductive.”

And there’s much more to come, too, as Mazda continues to evolve Flow through future models. For now, Mazda enthusiasts can experience Nagare as an indication of Mazda Design’s confident step in a new direction.

Other vehicles on display in Los Angeles will include the Mazda CX-7 crossover SUV, the Mazda CX-9 three-row, seven-passenger SUV, which arrives in North American Mazda dealerships in early 2007, and the brilliantly‑designed Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe with power retractable hardtop.

Well seeing that the RX8 and the 6 are the oldest models in Mazda's lineup, I would say that this concept will show off styling cues to the next-gen of one (or both) of those cars.

Of course the Kabura is probably an indication as to where the RX8 is going, so chances are that this Nagare will be more for the 6 replacement.

I don't know if Mazda can keep going with the rotaries. They've had so many expensive recalls on the RX-8s that there's no way they've made money on the model. If they're smart they'll give us something like the Kabura with the turbo direct injection 2.3.

I think the Kabura will be a separate model with a 2.0 4banger and 2+2 seating. It would also slot below the RX8. The RX8 will get DI shortly and they are playing with hydrogen now (no idea why since you can’t fill it up anywhere). Mazda loves the rotary and won’t give it up regardless of its issues. Although it is telling that you have not seen a Mazdaspeed RX8 yet but even the brand new CX-7 gets the treatment at this year’s SEMA show.

The only way the RX8 will go is if the Kabura gets a rotary. A 2500lb Kabura with a DI Renesis would be quite quick and beat the snot out of the RX8.

A curvier Mazda 6 would be nice and it is due for a redesign. It still goes up against Accords and Camry’s though so I wouldn’t expect anything too significant.

When is the LA autoshow? November what?

You're looking at Mazda’s RX-8 for the year 2020 – unveiled today at the Los Angeles Motorshow.

The Nagare concept car signposts Mazda’s new design direction for its next generation of sports cars.

Japanese for ‘flow’ and pronounced ‘na-ga-reh’, the futuristic four-seater coupe follows on from this year’s Sassou, Kabura and Senku concepts and aims to depict motion and speed with dynamic proportions and unique surface treatments – key features of Mazda’s future models.

Nagare is the brainchild of Franz von Holzhausen, head of Mazda’s American design team based in Irvine, California, and the idea behind the concept was initiated by Mazda’s new global design director, Laurens van den Acker.

“We’re looking well down the road with Nagare,” says van den Acker. “We want to suggest where Mazda design will be in 2020.” The car features butterfly-wing doors, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell drive train and a novel one plus three seating arrangement – the driver sits alone up front, with the rear given over to ‘lounge-seating’ for three.

“Mazda doesn’t produce concept cars to spin its wheels, and while some are more forward-looking than others, we simply do not create pure flights of fantasy,” says van den Acker, “so each of the concepts we present throughout this global show season will embody a different interpretation of our new surface language.”

Nagare will be one of four new concepts that Mazda will roll out over the next 12 months at the Geneva, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
