Have a Nice Day? General musings (pls read, everyone)

I remember first stumbling across this board. It was a small, but mighty group of Scoobnuts. As it grows, I detect some growing pains that are manifesting themselves in unfortunate ways, that I feel are worth commenting on as an i-Clubber.

Take it easy on the newbies. Not everyone knows how to search, or is even aware that a search function exists. The terms of their search might be poorly defined, and the answer might be lurking in a thread unrelated to their search terms. I've had this happen, and I know how to search.

Usually, it takes less time to answer a question than it does to snarl "Search, you rube!" at them. I think that we've all posted our share of dumb questions. I know that I have. But I also know that I have learned a lot on this board, both about my car, and how it works. And even as the post archive grows, I always bear in mind that not everyone is the same.

We're all driving Scoobies here, and I don't think there should be the hostitlity or open disdain that I see when some questions are posted. It isn't cool. After all, if someone posts a question about a tire/wheel size rubbing, it might be specific to them. Perhaps it's a wheel/tire/suspension combo that hasn't been wrung out yet. Ditto for all those other questions that come up from time to time.

I hew to the "if you've nothing nice to say, say nothing" adage, which also serves to keep the good karma flowing. It doesn't make someone leave in a huff either, feeling unwelcome in a space where anyone who drives a Scooby, whether it's a rusty XT-6 or a lucky bastid with an STi from Japan, should feel welcome and at home.

I also worry about the opinion posts that turn into flame fests. Bulletin boards such as this one offer the luxury of anonymity, which gives some people license to get a bit excessive in their opinions, I think. Then a potentially good thread turns into a flame-fest, which destroys the usefulness of any information that might actually have been imparted. "Yo mama." "No, YO mama."

This happens in coilover threads, or "WRX vs. the world" threads, or tire threads, or whatever.

I think it might help if as you type, you remember that there's someone sitting at the other end of that web connection, who has feelings and opinions that are just as strong as yours, and keep it cool. I think we all get along better that way.

There are lots of great cars out there, and just because our predilection for Subarus makes us loyal to that particular marque, doesn't mean that all else is garbage, or inferior. Everything is just different, and they're all fun in one way or another.

Just my few pennies' worth of opinion, and thanks for reading.

Kevin

Very well said!

And this board isn't very anonymous if you use it properly. As in filling in your city, state and then uploading pictures of your car in the member's section.

I really like this board and it has some great people on it. I have learned an insane amount about repairing and upgrading my car, but even more importantly I have learned how to DRIVE my car.

Thanks everyone!

I agree wholeheartedly. Even though I'm relatively new to this site, I have gained more knowledge than I had ever expected from a message board. I think the comments posted above are very well stated and should be read by all. I have seen very little flaming compared to other sites out there and it all seems to be in good fun. I just hope this level of mutual respect can continue. Happy Scoobying.

Fabulous post. I agree whole heartedly, I myself am a newbie (based on post numbers), and like to follow the rules, but we all make mistakes. We should cut each other some slack. Lets not have this board turn into some of the other boards that are around for auto enthusiasts. I always thought of the members here as a higher class enthusiast then others, as our vehicle of a choice is a little different. Lets keep it that way, and lets allow others to see it as such.

i suggest that all new members THOROUGHLY read the "about" section containing the rules of this board... that would help us all out a lot in the long run...

and yes... there are times.. i have to say "search" - but most of the time, i am quick to help w/a response or reply...

we will always to our best to welcome new productive members...

I believe this is due to the fact that we don't post kill stories and that our cars are not just about straight line performance. If you've read other forums on the internet about other cars, you may notice that alot of the flames are about who has the fastest this and that. And then everyone else on the board is like, "Nuh ahh! No way that's faster than my...".

You get the picture. WE ARE ALL Scooby enthusiasts. And we know our cars are better than everything else on the road.

are there any group buys planned for the morrette/morrette style twin conversions in the works?(serouisly, I want to know)

Very true. There are too many wannabe moderators ready to leap in and tear someone to shreds for double posting or some other minor infraction. I find some of the communication styles exhibited by one or two of the new moderators to be a little smug and uneven, but thats just a consequence of their first taste of authority; so hopefully they'll outgrow it.
