Hmm, sitting at the KLM terminal. Very nice car though, I'd love to have it.

Hmm - a 4 door? Is this confirmed for the M3 - or is it just because it's a test mule?

I think it might not be an M3, but a 350i or something to compete with the Audi S4... perhaps that is why the exhaust system is so discrete?

335 competes with S4, numberswise. This should be an RS4 killer, if the 400+hp V8 rumors are true, but doubtful they'll let it run faster than the M5. Too bad. What a package it would be with a lil' belt-driven boost and 500 ft-lbs.

hmm.. does the 335not have only 300hp compared to the 340 of the S4?

I think BMW is just firing an early salvo at Merc Benz with their 335 turbo engine with regard to what will be the standard in power levels for the 6 banger versions of the other manufactur's cars if you catch my drift... I am sure the next A4 from audi will have a V6 putting out closer to 300hp... The infinti G35 puts out around there already, as does the IS350. I am sure when the next C class emerges, it's V6 will put out closer to 300hp.

If i am right about this version of the 3 series, i would guess that it would bridge the gap between the upcomming M3 and the 335 they have right now.

335 acceleration is apparently better (magazine references only) than the S4 with less power (low 13's and 105 traps). Better fuel economy as well. That may become moot after the addition of AWDtrain loss and consequent weight gain, but it will still compete with the S4.

If other manufacturers up the ante for 6 cyls, BMW can simply turn up the wick a few lbs. - reflashes are already netting 75 CHP. Shiv is up 75 WHP with exhaust, intake & tune. So, with a few changes, BMW can probably squeeze 400 CHP out of the 335 motor in its final iteration.

Agreed, however, that a 350 would be a nice addition, as that would mean the M3 would be at least 450 HP.

The 335 has ~350-400lbs on the S4. The S4 has 40hp and a few ft-lb of torque on the 335. However, the 335 has been shown to be underrated, whereas there have been more than a few cases of the S4 being a bit overrated. So power for power, torque for torque, and pound for pound, I think the 335 wins the battle on paper.

I frequent S4 boards and e90post... and S4 owners are sure their car is faster and better. I haven't driven the 335 yet, but my feeling is the BMW is the faster car.

I think they're in the testing stages. Hence the shabby look of the "M." It'll look better when it's in production

the current turbo was developed because the BMW i-6 can't be enlarged much past 3.0L. It was originally developed for 2.5-2.8L. Remeber, when you increase the bore, you multiply it by 6 for the length of the motor. Remember the old 535 and 735? That was a "big block" i-6 that would not work for a 3-series, never mind the 1 series.

Also remember that they turbo'd the 2002 since the 4-banger was the only motor that would fit.

As far as the state of tune of the 335, remember that they still have the 333HP M3 to sell. Most car mags are talking how this practically hangs with the M3 now, imagine if it was 350HP. They needed some separation.

I think the new M3 will be a V-8 of 400-430HP, then a year later the 335 will jump to 330-350HP.

As stated above, I am sure this is only a test mule. The production exhaust would be much refined.

If I recall correctly, only M series BMWs get a quad exhaust, so that picture in a way confirms that this is some sort of M.

You sir are correct.

I doubt we'd see a M3 wagon. I don't think they will make a 335 wagon in the states although in Europe I beleive there is a M-package 335 wagon.
